Hi All,
I have recently acquired the Kamjove V60 kettle and have been looking for some input with a possible modification. I really like the kettle so far, yet I find the weight requirement to depress the pin (to prevent dry boiling) is unnecessarily high. From what I have read, some others on the forum share this gripe.
So my question is: Does anyone know of a way to disable this mechanism? Perhaps technically by opening the base?
I have considered trying to find a circular piece of some dense metal that will fit snug around the handle of the lid. This way, having the lid on will add a good deal of extra weight to depress the pin. I haven't yet tried to find something that will meet this need though.
I understand that this is a safeguard against dry boiling, but I would like to at least be able to use the kettle with slightly less water than it will work with now. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried a similar modification with one of these kettles?
Re: Kamjove Modification
I would just use more water. I think the weight it's set to should be about right. Leave a little extra water and just top it off sooner.
Re: Kamjove Modification
That's what I have been doing now. Just topping it off as necessary. The reason I am looking for an alternative is that I am not too fond of reboiling the same water so often. I also find that by the time I am done with my last steep, I have a good deal of leftover boiled water.
I find this a waste of energy as I have to boil more water than I ever end up using. It also takes much longer to boil.

Re: Kamjove Modification
You can always just use the same water the next time... unless you're going between weeks between making tea, there is no need to dump the old water out the next time you go to make tea.
Most of those immersion heaters are pretty efficient, so I doubt you'll get much of an energy difference from heating less water at one time.

Re: Kamjove Modification
timbee, I feel for you. That was the only thing about the kettle that I didn't like when I bought my first Kamjove. I eventually got used to it and am glad I didn't do anything that may have hindered the safety devices. A few months ago, mine stopped working. Upon inspection I found that one of the pins in the base somehow became stuck (dirt or something) and this caused it to get hot enough to melt the plastic around it. Thankfully, the safety devices worked and shut off the kettle.
If you find yourself needing only a small amount of water, you can hold down the kettle by hand until the water boils. Of course, it's much quicker if the water is already warm from the previous boil.

Re: Kamjove Modification
wow I would definitely like to avoid a situation like that. Sometimes I do just hold it down. I've also had success putting my heavy 4oz cup on top of the lid, upside down. Not the best solution, but it works.
