Yesterday, TeaChatters had to answer, "Besides TEA, what other serious food interests do you have?" You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.
Welcome everyone to another TeaDay, celebrate by brewing some tea and sharing what is in your cup today, all day! Check out what others are drinking as well, that is half the fun of TeaDay. If you need to, you can reflect back on your TeaDay.
Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. Are you a first generation Tea drinker or do you come from a long line of sippers ... or somewhere in between. Share a bit of your family's TeaHistory today...or how you blazed a new trail.
I am as always looking forward to hearing about everyone's TeaDay, so...bottoms up...refill...repeat.

Re: Sunday TeaDay 3/7/10 TeaGenerations?
My father used to but doesn't take tea anymore, and my mum won't touch the stuff. I have a faint memory of my grandparents on my fathers side drinking tea, but in general it's mostly coffee for all of them. Certainly my great grandmother and great-great aunts were renowned in my family for the strength of the coffee they brewed, heh.
But, since there is some history of tea-drinking, I voted 'not really', leaning toward a 'yes, essentially'.
Empty mug at the moment
But had a lemongrass tisane earlier.

1st generation. I can't remember my parents ever drinking it. We would make sun tea when I was a kid, but they never drank that, either- it was just because I liked it.

It was my big sister who introduced me to green and white tea, but she doesn't drink tea as consciously. So yep, first gen?

I am not in anyway the first and will certainly not be the last. Tea runs deep in our blood and traditions. It goes back as many generations as tea itself. I come from India and I don't need to tell you how big a roll tea plays in life and family and my family and I fit nicely into that stereotype. The only modern impact is the inclusion of new types of tea and method of preparation. Otherwise still a family afair.

Exactly.RachelC wrote:LOLSchrammy wrote:Grandmothers are from Italy and Ireland. Grandfathers are from Germany and England. need I say more?Too funny. So a cup of tea in one hand and a beer or wine in the other. Sounds good to me.

1st gen for sure. My folks were connoisseurs of instant coffee. There was rarely even a lipton teabag in the house.
Oh, and no tea yet this morning, waiting for somebody else to wake up so I have someone to share with. Probably fukamushi sencha when the time comes.

By no means a first generation tea drinker! My parents drank tea only, until we came to the U.S. Then my dad drank coffee at work but only tea was ever served at home. My grandparents drank tea, and, on my father's side, I know that my great-grandmother was famous for her strong tea. He said that he would go around to collect his penny from her on a Friday, and always tried to get out of drinking the tea. She would make it in the morning, steep it all day, and keep adding a spoonful along the way!!!
My parents, brother and I were born in Scotland. Their parents were born in Lithuania and Poland, so I imagine a very long line of tea drinkers!
Both my sons drank tea until going away to college and entering the Air Force. Both granddaughters and DILs are tea drinkers.
Hooray for tea!

Not a first generation tea drinker, but I am a first generation coffee drinker
Besides, I started drinking oolong before my parents. But my aunt and mom soon caught up. So I guess I am a 1.5 generation oolong drinker

I can remember when I was little always having to go get my grandma a glass of tea. Always a full glass of ice then pouring the tea from the pitcher. She would also have a hot cup of tea in the morning. My mom was always a tea in the morning drinker as well. I'm trying to introduce her to the loose leaf world, but so far it hasn't worked.
I'm having almond Oolong this morning.

So since it skipped a generation do I start over? My Grandmother yes, but I can't remember my mother or father ever having tea. They loved their coffee. So I guess that makes me First Generation?

Essentially, yes. My fond early tea drinking memory is of drinking tea with my dad, but I think that was just a phase for him. I am definitely the first aficionado (sp?) in my family. My husband has gotten a little involved in my interest and is liking Puerh quite a bit. The rest of the family tolerates my excitement about tea!
Nilgiri Nonsuch in my cup today. It's a beautiful day here so I'm going to try to get outside and do some yard work.
