Owes its flavors to oxidation levels between green & black tea.

Top quality oolongs for bottom dollar!

by tingjunkie » Mar 10th, '10, 00:42

I haven't seen one of these threads in a while, so let's do it.

I just had a killer session of Jing's Milan AAA Dan Cong tonight. Every time I have this tea it makes me stop to reflect on how high the quality-to-price ratio is. At $32 for 100g, it's a killer! Complex flavors and aromas, lots of brews, good qi, long perfumed finish.

The Classic Roast TGY from the Tea Gallery, at $33 for 100g, is another tea which makes my list for excellent value considering how good it is. Fill a small pot or gaiwan up with this tea and you're in for 7+ infusions of sweet, intense, choco-roasty goodness.

Farmer's Choice Baozhong from Floating Leaves (sold out  ) is up there too. I'm just waiting for the spring 2010 to hit, and I'm on it.

So... what makes your list for best oolong bang for the buck? I want to hear about the teas that make you feel like you just got away with something when you order them.

I really like the AAA Milan Dancong and Farmer´s Choice Baozhong too :)

btw the everyday Milan Dancong also from Jing is a really great buy...it´s not as tasty or complex as the AAA but it´s still very enjoyable and the price is extremely good for an oolong of it´s quality :)

Also from floating leaves my other favourite is the taiwan wuyi from 2008...it´s 50% off so the price is awesome. I´ve already stocked up lol :)

'classic roast' dong ding from Teamasters - $20 for 100g. This my current favorite (even when not considering the price).

Love me a bargain!

Is that the same tea we had the other day? The one you were letting mellow for a few months?

What's going on? No one wants to give up their deal info for fear of all their teas selling out?

I''l show you mine if you show me yours.

Kung Fu King, a traditional high fire TGY from Aroma Tea House/Lam Kie Yuan...perhaps the best high fire TGY I've had for the price. It's a little less balled up, which is a bit old-school, and may make it easier to age.

There is no top qualilty Oolong for bottom dollar.
Perhaps your topic needs to read good value for the buck. Top quality implies a grade of tea that cannot be bottom dollar if you are talking about Chinese tea. If you are talking about Darjeelings, that would be a different story.

Well, I think, top quality is a stable concept (or maybe relative too?), but bottom dollar is really a relative concept. :P

Unless you thought I was hoping to find authentic DHP from the original bushes for 50c per gram, perhaps the title is less than literal?

+1 for the AAA Milan from Jing

Also - the shui xian from FLT is another winner to me. Also the house oolong is dirt cheap and good but better yet, the da yu ling.

Alas, don't listen to me, I'm drunk on Tea from Taiwan's da yu ling - but it's $73 for 150g - which isn't bad at all - but probably not a bang for the buck price. But, when I die, pickle me in da yu ling.

I agree Bubba. The DYL from Floating Leaves is a great tea for a great price indeed. Looking forward to the spring offering of that too.

So, why not have a less than literal title? :D Anyway, no big deal.

It's an attention grabber... but enough chit-chat. I'm sure that someone of your expertise level must have some information of actual value to contribute to this thread?
