Greetings one and all to TeaDay. Please stop in throughout the day and share with us what is in your cup!
Yesterday we discussed the time we spent throughout the day thinking about TEA. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.
Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. Thinking about tea ... have you ever felt there are words you have been intimidated by, did not know what they meant, felt silly asking for the meaning, or even knew there was a word for something yet had no idea what it was?
I see a glossary in the making, please begin sharing words here that you either do or did not know the meaning to ... I will create a topic that will be a precursor to a glossary hopefully in conjunction with Adagio, but that remains to be seen.
I am looking forward to sharing this TeaDay with everyone, bottoms up!

Re: Friday TeaDay 3/19/10 Tea is the Word that you "herd?"
Shu puerh, sheng puerh, dan cong etc. these I have just learned. Most of all the different tea varieties like dan cong frighten me.
It disappoints me I can't read the names of the teas and know what it is and where it comes from (unless it's clearly mentioned). After all it's pretty important to know if you want authentic tea.

I'd really like to know first hand the difference between the several types of bitterness and aftertastes that can occur when drinking tea, but it has more to do with not having experienced them or being unsure about their exact taste than not knowing the meaning of the word itself.
I. e. se/ku/hui gan etc.

Wow, slow TD!
I have definitely gone through growing pain periods where the terminology just blew me away. It would have been helpful if there was a glossary right here at my fingertips, instead I had to look elsewhere. There are glossaries available, but it would be nice having one as part of TeaChat.
Began the TD with an older Long Jing brought out of retirement due to in house sencha shortage.
Served in a Jade Wan. SweeTea was impressed while Gandalf and Pyrit would have rather played than check out the jade.

Nice jade cup, wow! I have been wanting one for some time, but most are sooo tiny. That's beautiful.
In my cup this morning Darjeeling Oolong from Camellia Sinensis.

...Time to take a roadtrip to make that jade cup mine, Chip.
Incidentally, I suspect that TD is slow because it's a lovely day out. And here I'm stuck writing bits of my thesis. Ugh.
A nice roasty TGY from Red Blossom in my cup this afternoon.

I know almost exactly how that feels (homework this year, thesis next two years, oy vey), so I sympathize!leiche2 wrote: Incidentally, I suspect that TD is slow because it's a lovely day out. And here I'm stuck writing bits of my thesis. Ugh.
Gunpowder green tea is accompanying me in a thermos to a physics colloquium, some rose congou is going to get me through homework later, and after dinner may be something herbal or more green tea, I'm not sure.

Woh -
- stunning wan Chip! Whew!
Great 'mod' canister too!
There are so many tea terms/words that I don't know.
A glossary would be awesome!
Some of the names issue for me is the "creative" naming of teas when a standard chinese (or other country of origin) name may exist.
It would also be great to have some organizing section about geographical areas and relation to tea types/names? cause aren't at least some teas named this way? ohh, and there could be a teapot/ware section - cause gosh there are confusing names related to yixing pots and wares, also with japanese wares, inside parts, outside parts, etc.
(it'd be just crazy amazing if the glossary could pop up as an overlay so you didn't have to switch pages while reading TC
- just dreaming
)
Currently sipping a home blend of kabusecha, ooigawa aoba, and TV gyo.

As a beginner, I'm definitely in need of a glossary! But it'll come in time, and reading the forums is going to be a huge help.
Started this morning with Den's Fukamushi Maki, moved on to sharing a little Tencha-Kuki Houjicha with my son this afternoon. Went from nice mid-50's springtime yesterday to 20's and snowing today. I think we're going to go out for a short run in a bit and then come back to warm up with some more houjicha!

Re: Friday TeaDay 3/19/10 Tea is the Word that you "herd?"
I definitely come across words from time to time that I don't know, or something occurs in my teamusings/makings that I know there are probably words for, but they're not in my vocabulary - and like a foreign language, I end up trying to talk around the word. Nothing in particular comes to mind at the moment though, aside from what's already been mentioned. A TC Glossary would be awesome!
Started out the day with some Darjeeling at work, got home a little early and made matcha! (No pics, left my camera upstairs, and it was the same cup as last time. The flavor's growing on me, but it'll take some time. A small bit of brownie helped the flavor a lot!!) Now sipping some peach/vanilla oolong before heading over to a friend's house for dinner!
