Help me: I need a sheng puerh tea cake with smoked taste.

One of the intentionally aged teas, Pu-Erh has a loyal following.

Help me: I need a sheng puerh tea cake with smoked taste.

by tatatizia » Mar 28th, '10, 13:49

Hi! I need your help! I need to find a sheng (uncooked) puerh tea cake good with a strong smoked taste. I like semi-aged cakes. I especially want to find a cake with a taste similar than Six Famous Tea Mountains Yiwu sheng cake yellow label 2006.
Thanks for your help. :)

I only have experience with 07 and 08 Xiaguans. A really nice full flavored puerh with some smoke is the 08 FT Baoyan mushroom - jincha

oh....this one has lots of smoke...a little too much for me

Also, I assume you know this, but the smoky taste is generally considered a flaw, though many people think it's likely to fade over time. If you like it, more power to you, though you might consider drinking an intentionally smoked tea (not puer) if that's what you're into.

Yes, Xiaguan Sheng tea all has the smoked aroma.
But other tea mountains also have the smoked aroma, such as Bulang mountain, Lao Banzhang. These two are super good to taste as well. :D

Does this apply to all puerh in general?

Thinking here of a favorite puerh, one of whose attractions to me is a lovely delicate smokiness.

I dont think the smokiness is a flaw for all the Pu Er teas. For Xiaguan's all Sheng Pu Er, it always has the smoky aroma. which is their making-techniques.
It is also true that some maocha from some tea farmers have the unpleasant smoky aroma, which is due to the smoke from their stoves, since many minorities just put their Maocha in the kitchen. This happens a lot in the past, but now it is getting better and better.
So in general, as long as the smoky aroma is pleasant, then it is not considered as a flaw, since many tea merchants in China now ask their tea farmers to make the smoky Sheng Pu Er to meet their clients requirement. :)

In general I don't like very much the smoke taste. I need to find a good sheng cake with smoke taste because a friend of mine LOVES the yellow label 2006 Yiwu 6FTM and wants to drink only this kind of pu.
I gave as present to her some sheng cakes that I love (one of my favourite is Xiaguan Ancient Wild tree) but she said me that it has no sufficient smoke taste for her. So I gave her the 2009 Yiwu 6FTM but she said me that the cake has smoke taste but not the nice aged flavour of the 2006 cake.
Unfortunatly the only seller that I know that has the 2006 6FTM is Tuocha but he can not send it to me because there are a lot of problem with the italian customs. So I must order only from YS or similar.

Someone can suggest me a good semi-aged sheng with a medium smoked taste similar than the taste of 2006 6FTM Yiwu but that I can buy from YS or similar?
(Yes, I know that I am a difficult person but my friend is more difficult than me! )

Thank's puerhking for your suggestions!

You can order the stone pressed 2006 Yiwu 6FTM from Taobao here, here and here. Ordering should not be difficult if you use an agent like Taobaonow to order for you in Mandarin and ship to Tuscany.

规格:400g /饼 (400 grams per cake)

I don't know the particular smoked puerh you're trying to match, but my favorite puerh is the smoky sweet earthy 2007 White Bud Sheng Puerh from Norbu, whose smoky flavor stays light but present and pleases my palate through many infusions:

I just found a reason to order 2 more of these beengs, so I can have one for home, one at work, and one at the new satellite office.

Second for great and cheap xia guan tuo :D I normally don't like smoky flavor, but I enjoy the pleasant smokiness in a >5-year-old xia guan tuo. It would be even cheaper if you buy some new xia guan tuo at a few $ each and store them for several years in your bedroom :D
