Hi,
I'm looking for reputable online chawan (matcha bowl) retailers who sell good quality chawan.
The few that I already know about are:
http://www.yuuki-cha.com/
http://www.hibiki-an.com/
http://www.o-cha.com/
Please add to the list. I am looking to purchase a good quality and nice chawan (thanks to my tax refund!).
Which Chawan would you choose?

Hi Thibault,
I just have to recommend etsy.com - artisan's site.
I can't recommend enough the artisans on this site (TeaChat - under TeawareArtisans) for their chawan.
Cheers!
Hey - show us your chawan after you've chosen? Maybe with a bit of matcha gracing your new bowl?

Thibalt,
When it comes to Japanese chawan, there is good quality....and then there is good quality. The truly good stuff from significant artists in Japan is what most people would likely consider "really expensive".
Are you talking hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars, (or even tens of thousands of dollars
)?
If you are looking for good pieces....... and want to work in English....... contact Robert Yellin at e-yakimono.net.

PS: Seeker... thanks for plugging us "domestic" folks down in Teawareartisans

Thanks for all the replies! I won't be talking about tens of thousands of dollars. I wish!
I'd say the most I could afford is $150'ish.
If there are other online retailers, let me know! I'll check out the artisans too.

+1 to Seeker and iannon on recommending our TeawareArtisians!!!Seeker wrote:I can't recommend enough the artisans on this site (TeaChat - under TeawareArtisans) for their chawan.

We own pieces from many of them and love them all. It is nice to have this subforum here as you really get to know the artists and may talk with them one on one to relay your 'chawan' desires to them individually.
You will not be disappointed, I can guarantee that firsthand!

Re: Online Chawan (matcha bowl) retailers
Thanks for the replies!
Some of the items in some of the websites are way out of my range and probably beyond my aesthetics abilities at this point to appreciate. I guess I would say I'm basically entry-level in terms of sophistication and that I'm fine with it
After all, I'm only willing to spend up to US$150ish or even 200 max and it seems like many of the "artisanal" pieces are way beyond that.

Which Chawan would you choose?
I'm considering the following chawan. Which one would you choose and if you can, tell me why.
I like all of the following ones and haven't yet been able to make my mind, and I can only buy one. Thus, I want to hear about your aesthetics taste to help me jolt my thinking and appreciation further
And, perhaps you might be able to tell me something about the quality of the bowls, if you are one of those knowledgeable type. Thanks!

Re: Which Chawan would you choose?
I'm also thinking, if I were to get one of these traditional looking raku (from above), which one would you recommend I get?
1 and 2 are from Hibiki-an.com (cost approx $145)
-or-
4 and 5 are from Yuuki-cha.com (cost approx ($70)
-or-
6 and 7 from o-cha.com (cost approx $120)
Do you think the quality of these raku are about the same? And what about aesthetics? Which one would you go for if only looking at these raku?

Re: Which Chawan would you choose?
Based entirely on my sense of aesthetics, and given that I'm not a fan of such bright colors, I'd go for 7, 6, or 1. In that order. I actually like 7. I have no idea about quality.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply.elf_man wrote:Based entirely on my sense of aesthetics, and given that I'm not a fan of such bright colors, I'd go for 7, 6, or 1. In that order. I actually like 7. I have no idea about quality.
I notice that in my chawan and chawan accessories, everything is in a tone of grey or brown so I thought it might be nice to now move on to something brighter or more saturated like red or black.
Looking forward to more replies from others

Could you post the link to the item above? I'd like to take a closer look at it.
Another question too is that with chawan that have such a narrow bottom, how is one supposed to whisk matcha in a bowl like that? Or is such a bowl not for matcha?
