I picked up a couple of metal teacups - the ones that are the composition and feel of a tetsubin. OK, someone give me a clue on how to use these, or is it some joke that I am not in on? I brew sencha to about 170 degrees or so. The cups heat up to the point that I cannot pick them up without wrapping a dishrag around them. So how are you supposed to use these things? Maybe you are supposed to have only tepid tea in them? Please stop laughing and advise.
Thanks-
Ed

I never thought about that inherent problem. I figure they are for Japanese teas, and not for super cool ones like Gyokuro.
Beats me. I am in need of a head scratching emoticon!
Someone should sue Teavana due to burned lips!

Re: Metal Tea Cups?
Yeah I got this lovely for my birthday from a sweet friend, who actually paid international mail to ship it to me. Double ouch.

Re: Metal Tea Cups?
I purchased a couple for less than $10 as part of a domestic order, so I don't feel too badly burned (pun always intended). So are these cups some sort of inside joke? Maybe they are just for show?

They match the tetsubins.
I guess you use them for cooler teas and and only fill part way. They might work well for spirits.

I bought one for my wife as a joke. She's always breaking my cups by dropping them. I told her that this was one cup she could never break and it's true. When she dropped it onto my teatray, it certainly didn't break. The teapot and cup it landed on shattered though.

Very very nice, and a nice saucer, I didn't even know they came with saucers. I have 4 sizes tetsubins and no cups. I don't like the black interior.Victoria wrote:Yeah I got this lovely for my birthday from a sweet friend, who actually paid international mail to ship it to me. Double ouch.
how can you see the tea. Now if they come out with a white interior.

Oh no ... I have saved more than one piece of teaware with a hacky sac rescue ... and I never played hacky sac either. I guess instinctive to throw my foot under falling teacups and the like.IPT wrote:I bought one for my wife as a joke. She's always breaking my cups by dropping them. I must never get one of these, if I threw my foot out to needlessly save one of these, I would surely break a foot.
Either that, or I would break some teeth. Burn some lips and handsies.

These things are too dangerous for me.

Only use them in the winter time, when its so cold you need gloves.bigmonstertruck wrote:The cups heat up to the point that I cannot pick them up without wrapping a dishrag around them. Thanks-Ed
then they'll feel nice through the gloves. (little hand warmers)

Yeah, Teavana has the whole ensemble, for a small fortune. Pot, cups, saucers ... their inventory is astounding in how much of this stuff they have in a single store.nonc_ron wrote:Very very nice, and a nice saucer, I didn't even know they came with saucers. Nice dragonfly cup. I purchased a "steel" colored abstract dragonfly tetsubin as one of my very first teaware purchases, figured bigger is better, right?

She can drop this one on your toes with no damage, and probably step on it herself with none to the cup.IPT wrote:Oooh, plastic. Great idea! I'll be getting my wife a plastic teacup next.
