Anyone have a room in their house dedicated to tea? I will soon have an empty bedroom. One bedroom is already a guest room, one is an office, and so the other can be whatever I want it to be (according to my wife). So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a home tea room?
Thanks-
Ed

Make it a tea ceremony room! Go with a traditional style- I like the Japanese styles with contrasting colors, asymmetry and odd numbers of things (not sure what it's called again). !!!!! *wishes I had a tea room :'( *

I am fortunate enough to have a traditional washitsu heya (Japanese room) in my home that easily converts to a chasitsu heya (tea room). Here is a picture (from a number of postings down the page in the link below) of the tokonoma section which was posted in another thread on here about "Japanese Scrolls":

Yeah, I love your room, John! Now how to incorporate that into an old stone farm house
But I concur, a Japanese style room that is convertable like John's would be ideal. Scrolls, teaware, bamboo, screens all around! Perhaps a large glass door leading to a Japanese garden that yu can open to add a whole new dimension to your tea experience.

That is my dream! I would love a fully dedicated room such as John has. But I will most likely, if ever do get space, it will most likely be a bedroom to convert also. I would move all my teaware in there and line one wall with it. The other wall for scrolls and shelves with candles. Shoji screen screens are a must! Tatami mats on the floor and a great table.

Re: Room Dedicated to Tea?
I actually have two rooms dedicated to tea. I bought a house a couple of years ago and the master bedroom and bath have been turned into a tearoom and tea and teaware storage room. I am fortunate to have a wife who is very understanding. It has a balcony, which I intend to turn into a tiny Japaneseish garden-like area, essentially for drinking tea.

Anyone who cares to visit me is more than welcome to come and share tea with me in my tearoom. If anyone is traveling to China, let me know.
Re: Room Dedicated to Tea?
I like the way the Koreans have their tea rooms setup. Everyone on the floor around a low tea table with the tea master presiding. Very informal, warm, chatty, and, no pretense or attitudes. The main thing is to start out with a tea table and build around it. Sitting on the floor, comfortably, the choice of teaware and decoration for the rest of the room is up to one's taste. The nice thing about Korean floors is the radiant heating present everywhere.
Here is a shot of yours truly as guest tea master. Seong il is the gentleman on the left.

Nice pic Tead Off! Can I squeeze in there on your right? That way I can also have a close up look at all that teaware along the back wall.

Re: Room Dedicated to Tea?
What a wonderful set up. I was looking at the shelves in the corner too and wondering what treasures it held. Thank you for the photo. Do you have a Flickr account or somewhere where you will post your photos of your trip? I'd really love to see more.
I LOVE those cups with the saucers. Did he make them also?

Re: Room Dedicated to Tea?
That shot is from my recent trip and is typical of the tea rooms that I was in. It seems everyone including the shop owners, has a place for tea, all around a table with cushions on the floor. The decor varies. Those tables are not cheap but they are always present and form the focus of the tea room. Like the Chinese, there is always a good feeling and good time drinking tea in the Korean style. Nothing really formal or stiff about it. And, there are always some goodies to eat. It's surprising how sharing a cup of tea opens doors on many levels.
