Saturday TeaDay 5/29/10 Brew hard or hard to overbrew?

by Chip » May 29th, '10, 02:34

It is TeaDay, again! That is good news, right?!? So come to TeaDay and share what is in your cup throughout the day.

Yesterday we discussed more about overbrewing. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. We finish up this bitter topic. What is the "hardest tea for you to overbrew?" Please share with us.

I am looking forward to sharing this TeaDay with everyone. Bottoms up.

I find puerh most forgiving.

I say I'm best with white teas, but that might be because the flavor is so light that overbrewing doesn't bother me.

I'm craving some sencha, but I just packed up all my teas for my big move (and dented tins in the process). I might have some iced chai later instead.

The only two teas that I am comfortable dropping into my thermos, adding hot water, and letting them steep for hours or all day are shu puerhs, and houjicha. Some oolongs and one or two greens are nearly as forgiving, but the water temps have to be more nearly just right.

So shus are easiest to not overbrew. But though I still enjoy them, they're not my favorite, as my puerh adventures are building a stronger preference for the shengs.

This morning, flying without a net: something seems to have gone wrong with my digital thermometer overnight, and my Dragon Well was made with water whose temperature was estimated. So far, it's going ok. First infusion is sweet and light.

Then will be moving on to something oolong. Will check in later.

Hardest to overbrew have been dan congs and other wulongs. Very forgiving in my opinion. With ball shaped wulongs I sometimes, but rarely, overbrew.

Just woke up, my graveyard shift work started last night.. so tired still..

Pu-erh is definitely the hardest for me to overbrew, and it's definitely one of my favorite teas. The really strong, full flavor is great.

Speaking of which, I'm currently drinking some pu-erh!

hmmm this one is a little trickier :?

Im going with darker oolong on this one because of two reasons. The main reason could be said of anything I brew gong fu style because when Im standing right there and brewing only for about 20sec its hard to overbrew on accident. I guess though dark oolongs win out because they are my current favorite so there would be even less likely I would walk away during an infusion.

If the gonfu wasn't involved then I would pick white tea because even if its overbrewed for several minutes its still drinkable. It just gets way too strong but not bitter.

It's hardest for me to overbrew black because it's my favorite and I've been brewing for all those years that I've told you about before!!!!

Adagio Black Pearl this morning with a few jasmine #12 thrown in. Interesting.

Well, I don't drink it myself, but I voted Puerh. My husband drinks it a lot and he has told me about leaving it to steep for 10 minutes or more and still loving it. Personally, it's harder for me to overbrew blacks and oolongs, since they is what I usually drink. Since I have more experience with them, I'm able to get a better cup.

Mao Feng Noir from Tao of Tea in my cup.

~ Happy Birthday to
Maitre_Tea & Scarlet Glow !! ~

Humm hardest to overbrew, most everything is easy to overbrew, so maybe herbal? And yeah it's a least favorite.

Started the day with some coffee at a local spot before errands, now the good stuff - '10 Spring Oolong from Tea Masters Blog.

I guess I will also vote for "shu" by default since each category but shu seemed vulnerable to overbrewing to me. And shu is an in between tea for me. Certainly not my fave or least fave.

Began the TD with a new opening, Hibiki-an Fukamushi Shincha. Came out verry mild, hmmm.

Currently Yutaka Midori Kaoru Supreme LE shincha from O-Cha with Mrs. Chip. This stuff is crazy good!

I have left houjicha for a few minutes rather than the normal 30 seconds and found it drinkable. And some of the yunnans can be pretty forgiving.

Lots of tea today - started with yunnan golden curls, a cup of matcha, then some Kagoshima Yutaka Midori Shincha from o-cha. This afternoon a few glasses of cold brewed sencha, then some dragon pearl.

I received my new yunomi and mug from Splitfire pottery and absolutely love them! Hopefully some photo's tomorrow - my efforts to capture them failed miserable today.

I went with white, since I can turn around, forget about it, and come back - oh, hey, this tea's still good! Oolongs, for me, tend to be difficult to overbrew as well, but I had to go with white on this one.

A small cup of CranApple this morning before going to our annual Scottish Games - which was so much fun, and we saw Prince Edward! But it was way too hot for tea, though I did take some of Adagio's bottled tea, which turned out to be a great idea - caffeine and something cool, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg! So not a big tea-day today.

I wanted to open and try tie luo han today but because of some storage "issues" I decided not to open it and have some qi lan instead so its all good.

Im very excited because I actually cooked something today  and used tea in it. My dad and his girlfriend are out of town this weekend so I was left to fend for myself with food. So I cooked up some steamed brown rice and made sencha to use instead of water and it turned out awsome. Maybe a little chewy but I wont complain :D

They should have had tea in Prince Edward's honor. :)
