Looking to buy a gaiwan

by plant partaker » Jun 7th, '10, 03:32

My preferences are, it ships out fast, its durable, and it's a trusted vendor. Or if anyone has a gaiwan they'd be willing to part with, i'm in need of one.

I've just placed my fifth teaware order with Pure Puer. This last order was for the Taiwanese made Sika Deer gaiwan. I haven't yet received it so I can't say for sure how it is, but I purchased it because it appears to be extremely thin porcelain and I plan on using it only for high quality Chinese and Taiwanese green teas. The overall fit and finish of lid, saucer, and cup appear to be much better than is typical. Pure Puer has a great slection of gaiwans ranging in price from $12 to $78 and from thick to very thin. You may find something suitable.

Most of their teaware is made in Taiwan so should be durable and of high quality. Of course the price may be related to how well the lid fits, etc. I've been very happy with the quality of everything I've purchased from them and the shipping has always been incredibly fast. I placed an order on Friday PM before the long Memorial Day weekend and still had the package on Tuseday via Priority Mail. The delivery has been like this for all orders I've placed.

What would be the best size for a gaiwan? I'm seeing 4 ounces and how would you brew in this vessel?

Size is subjective, but the bigger they are, the more likely they will give you some difficulty in pouring. I like 3-4 ounces. Bigger ones tend to sit.

Some will brew and sip directly from the gaiwan, I brew and decant into a "fair cup."

You can "cross brew" in a porcelain glazed gaiwan. So, pretty much anything, though you will find some might work better for one tea or another due to thickness of the walls.

Okay I see what you're saying. Are all gaiwans porcelain?
