Anyone like antiques?

by karmaplace » Jun 8th, '10, 10:19

This is a pretty thing. If I hadn't spent so much within the past couple days I'd almost consider bidding on it. I wish the seller knew a more precise manufacture date.

Anyone else have a thing for antiques? I just like the thought of owning something much, much older than myself, even if it no longer serves its function. It always amazes me when fragile things like teaware manage to outlive their original makers or owners.

I own a bunch of old Japanese ceramics of various types. I too like the concept of antiquity that comes inherently attached to such pieces. Drinking out of a cup made by an anonymous artisan hundreds of years ago gives a interesting feeling. The mind wanders with the history of the piece.

I have some Jomon Jidai (period) pottery shards that are about 10,000 years old, some with fingerprints. As a professional potter... it is very humbling and also "affirming" to handle those objects and reliaze that I am part of a living tradition that spans millenia.

best,

.............john

I own a meiji era paulownia tanuki statue, carved from a single block of wood. it's a beautiful little thing... I also have a (late Meiji or taisho) bronze incense sensor which I usually use in accompaniment to my tea sessions (at least on the weekends). antiques certtainly can have a certain mysticism to them... a history that in most cases is unknown but sets the mind to wandering...

I have yet to find antique teaware that I both a)like and b)can afford. But I keep looking...

I too collect antiques, and a little bit of everything, but my main focus is on antique teaware. My pieces are all Chinese. I collect what I call "farmer antiques", they are the pieces used by the commoners and I love the beauty in their simplicity. Every time I look at a piece, I can't help wondering who made this, what were they like, did they make it to sell, or as a gift to a friend or loved one. I also can't help but wonder who held and used this piece. For me antiques bring history to life and have a feeling that no modern piece could hope to emmulate.

I know the feeling...... especially when looking at older work in Japan as there is much older ware available, but the pieces that really speak to me are way out of my reach. This combined with the fact that my wife who is Japanese has the belief, probably Shinto in origin, that the previous owners souls are inhabiting the work thus one is bringing these souls into the house along with the work. As a result, not many older pieces here. :(

Best,
R

I wouldn't purchase that kyusu, no matter how old it may be. It's thickly glazed on the inside, way too many flaws all around, and looks like a cheap chinese knockoff to me. And the spout is busted up too. It's just not as sharp looking as kyusus from Banko or Tokoname. I strongly doubt it's authenticity.

Actually, I looked around, and I guess Banko did make that pot. I'm surprised, considering the style. I guess glazed kyusus tend to look like cheap chinese pots. I dunno. I would rather spend the money on a new Banko pot, one I can actually use, over an old one.

I have shown-off my antique ivory tea pot under "Newest Chapter! Show Off Your Pots and Cups XIII" and my avatar shows an antique brass tea pot. I have several antique chinese tea cups which I am still using.
