Ginormous Leaves!

by rabbit » Jul 2nd, '10, 10:10

Maybe it's just inexperience on my part, but my last order of tea consisted of a few that had HUGE leaves, larger than I'd seen before, the pictures here are of a 2010 spring imperial tai ping hou kui green, but I also had a 2009 "big white tree" sheng that had leaves so big I had to carefully bend them to fit inside my 150ml yixing without breaking them!

The tai ping hou kui is absolutely wonderful btw, and it's now one of my favorite Chinese greens.

Ha, tai ping hou kui leaves are pretty huge. I find that brewing in a glass cup works well because the leaves are a bit too large for the gaiwan.

Yeah, and the Cha Wang version is realllly big! TPHK is a top 4 Chinese green for me as well! Enjoy, but brew before eating master Rabbit!

When I was at Wing Hop Fung last weekend picking a few teas I looked for a long time at those enormous leaves in their big jar, and couldn't make up my mind to buy it, because the giant leaves were just so strange. I thought of smaller leaves as a sign of quality in most green teas. Now that I see they're really supposed to be gigantic, I'll try some next time.

I know it may be sacrilegious but I break them in half. It's such a mellow tea that I've never had a problem with astringency.

Rabbit, may I ask where you got these? Looks like I may have to check 'em out.

They are banned in Canada!

I saw them on the TeaSpring site, which is one place I got them in the past.

Yes this monkey pick is a wonderful tea. I have a yixing pot with a large opening where the leaves fit w/o breaking. It seems the leaves are hydrophilic and mine got moldy. The next order I kept in the ref and no more mold.
