Where do you break your pu?

by beachape » Jul 4th, '10, 14:24

Whenever I break up a bing or tuo I always get pu crumbs and dust all over the place. I was thinking about getting one of those bamboo pu breaking trays but they're a little pricey. What do you guys do?

I take out a paper plate and do my work on that, return the cake to the wrapper then cup the plate like a taco and pour the tea into the pot. just tap the plate and its clean and can be returned to where ever for the use of anything later on. quick simple and effective, i personally see no reason for the bamboo trays except for maybe the appearance?

I have used these trays as multipurpose trays for awhile now. I bought from DTH on eBay I think, but I just saw this one for $10:

I work on a flexible cutting board, or on a plate, or on the opened paper wrapper.

I love this one. It's totally worth it. Very easy to tap fannings from larger leaf pieces.

That looks like a decent price. I had been breaking them on the wrappers, but I would tend to slip and tear up the wrapper. I was going to use a cutting board put then the pu might aquire some of the food smell.

I break into my <bing, tuo, brick, etc> on the wrapper. I don't believe I've ever damaged the wrappers this way, but I do my best to keep the pick away from me and the wrapper -- easier with bings, harder with tuos.

I have a tin that I place the fannings into -- I just place the <bing, tuo, brick, etc> somewhere clean (or a paper towel), pick up the wrapper, and dump the bits into the tin.

I did pick up a tray, but it's a serving tray (i.e. you can pour water on it, or be messy with your tea pouring and it collects underneath).

I also break mine up on a bamboo tray. I use a cheap pu-knife from YS (basically a letter opener). When things get really tough (i.e. Xiaguan tuos) I break out the scratch awl and get down to business!

The tray is also great for separating fannings from leaves. Give it a quick shake and you are easily able to scoop out the leaves and then dump the fannings into some other container. For me it is the "House Blend."

I like the name "House Blend" May I use it. I've just ordered 3 more Tea canisters and I want to label one "House Blend".

I've tried all the ways mentioned here and they all leave bits of tea on the counter top. ImageI gave up a long time ago.

Snapped a pic of the tray in action yesterday.

Above is the "House Blend" where the leftover bits go. It's getting pretty full!

To the right is my trusty scratch awl. Makes even the most compressed cakes come apart.
