How many sheng cakes do you keep open at a time?

by beachape » Jul 12th, '10, 22:06

I get the impression that most people here like to chissle away a bit of a cake then wrap it up. If so, how many cakes do you tend to have "open" at a time. Obviously there isn't a wrong way, I guess I'm just curious if you guys like to sample a bunch or finish off a few before exploring more.

I have a feeling many people are "More than you can count" As even drinking sheng every day from the same cake it would easily take around 70 days drinking about 5 grams worth a day. So most people end up opening up one of each that they have, and seeing as how many people on the forum for young sheng consider an entire "cake" as a sample.

Yep, almost every cake I have has been opened and sampled. The only exceptions are duplicate cakes, but I don't have many of those.

Since I break off bits from the edge and don't break up an entire pu at once, I don't worry about how many are open, because they're not going to go off like a nitrogen-flushed or vacuum packed green or light-roasted oolong. Right now, I think I've at least sampled all of the dozen or so beengs and bricks and tuos that I have.

When I was drinking shu, I would just break the whole bing because we'd go through it pretty fast. Now that I'm getting into sheng I feel more like opening them all up and making a rotation. I only wish that I could wrap them up half as neatly as they started.

MarshalN has some nice wrapping skillz that are worth checking out. I fold this way now instead of the "randomly fold it up" method I had developed previously. :D

I like 2 purchase at least 2 of each cake or toucha, plus multiple varieties of each year. So I have at least 10 open at any given time.
