How to: fix breakages

by TeaDragon » Aug 5th, '10, 17:47

*sigh* I am such a klutz.

Sunday I bought a (inexpensive fortunately) covered serving pitcher at Imperial Tea. Today, I managed to drop the lid on the floor. The lid split in half across the top. There's a crescent smashed from the bottom where it's designed to sit inside the pitcher opening, but that's not visible and I can live without it. The two halves fit together *perfectly* with no missing chunks.

It's the lid, not the whole pitcher, so I can continue to use it as a lidless pitcher....but the idea to the lid was to help keep the tea warm. Is there any recommended glue that can be safely used to glue the back together so it can still be used as a functioning lid?

I'd better stay away from the expensive teaware!

Yes, thank you very much for that thread! I use JB Weld instead of brazing for hobby metalwork, and for repairing robots, but I would NEVER have thought to use it on foodware.

But then, I took a long hard look at the lid, and realized that all I REALLY need to do is tack the outside edges together which, by virtue of the pitcher construction, do not get steamed, so everything should be just fine.

Except now I'm chuckling like crazy. Just had a huge Cuban dinner and came home to brew up some pu'erh. It just so happens that the opening to the pitcher fits the bottom of my pu'erh khoi cup PERFECTLY. So my cup is being kept warm by the steam from the pu'erh in the pitcher!!!!!!

 Last night I accidentally discovered that my pu'erh teapot from Chaikhana fits *perfectly* on top the tea pitcher whose lid I broke. I never would have thought to stack these items if I hadn't broken the lid...what I've ended up with now is I can fill the pitcher with hot water, and start brewing the pu'erh in the teapot on top of the pitcher while the steam from the pitcher keeps the pot hot.

Then I transfer the hot water into a gaiwan (this is when I don't have my tea kettle at home), pour the pu'erh into the pitcher, then pour a cupful of pu'erh and plonk the cup of pu'erh on top of the pitcher to likewise keep the pitcher warm AND the cup hot.

I'll have to get pictures. It's darn cute. And darn handy when the kettle is at work and I'm having to boil a big pot of water in the other room.
