by Yemstar » Aug 18th, '10, 16:28

Hey guys, i really want to get a decent tea tray but i can't find any online for a decent price apart from the one at jing:

What are you looking for in a tea tray?

A small ceramic tray with just enough room for gaiwan and cups? A larger bamboo tray? A fancy carved tray with tubing to connect to a separate vessel for drainage?

I've seen all of these at my local shop, and I know they sell some of them online.

This is confusing. There is a jingteashop.com and a jingtea.com, but they are unrelated.

Yes, Jing Tea is in the UK and is more of a mainstream tea shop.

Jing Tea Shop is in China and is more of a small vendor dedicated to
specializing in Chinese teas.

Personally, I'm looking for something simple similar to what Yemstar posted initially. Simple of intermediate size. The one in Victoria's profile image looks like a good one too.

Mine is from Andao Tea and a great value. But their website is having issues right now, not sure what is going on? You need a password to view teaware? You might try contacting them.

Same, preferably something made of darker wood that can hold water.

Quite solid. Can hold quite a lot of water beneath.

Obviously a very standard design, almost the same as what I have now too.

I bought a couple of smaller ones at first, which seemed to have a nicer design, but use taught me that the attractive multi-level design removed a good portion of the useful surface because of the step-offs, so it was actually even *smaller* in practical use. This one is useful to the edges, sufficient for four small gaiwans and tasting cups for my comparisons.

Haven't seen anything quite like it in wood in my local shops, however: I remember some very large irregular burl-like pieces with incised or painted decoration, set up for drains rather than the removeable lid/tray combos.

Actually, just noticed that the tray posted above has that two-step inner rim that makes not all of the top surface usable.

I have this one, where the whole top is flat, and it lets me use right up to the edge:
