Thermos!

by TeaDragon » Aug 30th, '10, 18:29

Recently I was musing about the Gongfu tea ceremony, and this image popped into my head of happily performing the ceremony at the beach. Why not? There are certainly travel sets available, which would make this a viable option for hikes in the forest, to the beach....pretty much anywhere.

The only catch: how to get boiling water? I wasn't that keen on dragging around something that would require actual fire, as that's prohibited in many places now. Then the DUR! lightbulb went off.....get a thermos!

After a bit of review, I picked up a Thermos Nissan 34-Ounce Stainless-Steel Vacuum Insulated Briefcase Bottle and gave it a spin. I'm hell on breakables so I opted out of the glass insulated flavors. Anyways, I'm quite pleased with this model. It only takes at most two hours for me to get to the beach, and this thermos is cool to the touch and keeps the water plenty hot for hours and hours. I'm actually using it at work right now to keep freshly boiled water at that temperature, rather than subjecting my cubemates to repeated instances of firing up the UtiliTea at work. This thermos will hold one entire full UtiliTea of water.

I'll do some time/temperature charting on this baby this weekend so you can see the dropoff rates.

That is an interesting idea. I have actually at times not brewed a cup when it was particularly quite in the office knowing how loud the UtiliTea is! I already have small one I know keeps water very hot, so I will bring it in and give it a try. Thanks

Iv actually been doing this at work for a while, it really saves trips back and forth to the hot water faucet. Sometimes i do it at home when i dont have time to keep reheating water.

I've never brewed tea in the woods but I have always wanted to. Maybe I might have to copy your technique and try it out myself.

I love thermos from MEC of Canada :D I use it at home and at work most of the time. I don't like reheating water. One thing I can't solve is, the thermos (probably the plastic lid part) add some flavor to water, although it's not too much if water is stored for no more than several hours.

Many congratulations if you have found a solution that meets your needs.

Personally, If I wanted chinese tea at the beach, I would use the same solution that works well for me in the mountains -

A Trangia Stove.

I use a thermos in the same way. I take it too the park with a Gaiwan and cups and make tea for strangers, while my daughter plays around.....occasionally coming over for tea herself (age 2)
