The start of my tea set!!

by Tea4Todd » Sep 6th, '10, 04:12

Is on it's way to my doorstep!!

I ordered from Dragon Tea Room, a nice white tasting cup, a 3oz white gaiwan, and a glass serving pitcher. I'm pretty excited, I'll soon get more things, but for now..I'm building things up! I'll post pics when I get everything. In the meantime, post pics of your current setup or setups that you'd like to have. I like all the subtleties of tea presentation...that mat/table/stand that everything sits on, the coasters, or cushions for the tea cups, even the utensils, if you have them, are interesting too. Share some of your sets :)

I know how you felt. I started tea few months ago. Been on a buying spree... Finding the tea set you love is indeed satisfying.

It's ridiculously addictive. Who would've thought, that little leaves could provide such an enjoyment in life.

Sweet...which gaiwan did you get from DTH? Its probably one I've got :p

Love gaiwans....here's my daily 3

I try and avoid buying too much teaware. Its a very easy just to get in to buying stuff for the sake of it. They are almost 2 separate hobbies to me which meet like venn diagram. I dont buy stuff just because I like the look of it any more...its really stuff that will give me a little something different/benefit although even with that I try and bend the rule to get more teawares.

At its most basic I think a good set-up for me if I had to smash it all up and have the bare minimum i'd want

1x 220ml pitcher
1x around 100ml gaiwan
1x around 200ml gaiwan
2x 60-80ml cups
1x nice tea table

and a bucket load of tea :D

I really think this is one of the most peaceful hobbies I have ever taken up. I used to be an avid martial artist, and was very into TRADITIONAL (not western style) Tae Kwon Do, it had it's peaceful moments, but was high energy, HIGH discipline, and a lot of training, so the peaceful nature of it slowly faded.

I really like taking time out of my day now to set everything up (even though I do all these crazy makeshift methods since I am waiting for my proper equipment) it's still fun learning about it, and experiencing the different brews....burning myself is always fun too

LOVE this setup and it's perfect for me as well! My only addition (just because I think they look really nice) are some nice stone or cherry wood tea cup saucers in a square shape, I just think the dark wood, or ebony, or stone plays a nice contrast to the white porcelain and light to medium colored liquors of the tea.

I got the 100ml Gaiwan from DTH. Just like the one you have pictured there! I love your tea table too...that's probably very similar to one I would buy for myself. I also got the 220ml Glass Pitcher from DTH and I got this really nice tea cup I only got 1 of everything since I do a lot of tea for one with this method. When my gf comes over, I'll switch to my old western style brewing for her teas....and maybe purchase a Kyusu and some japanese tea ware since she likes delicate whites and greens.

I agree with the addiction to spending though...ugh, I think I'm creating a small hole in my wallet from this hobby lol.

Might I suggest you looking into Iaido? I am a practitioner (ima jozu jaarimasen). You might find it interesting given your background and what you just said.

I actually have looked into it, we have 1 school here in South Florida the problem is, it's very expensive because they are a "multi-art" school...so the way they work is, you pay for the entire schooling and then can take a multitude of classes from different instructors....I really only want the aikijutsu and iaido, but they want me to pay for the entire thing, and it's 120 a month :/ Too rich for my blood.

Funny you should mention the ebony wood contrasting against the white porcelain. I just bought a bigger tea table and that's exactly why I went with a dark wood. just looks great with white teaware.

Yeah I agree, I also like the dark clay pots with the white porcelain and blue painted tea ware. Really nice effects, it's really neat how creative one can get with all of this.

Ouch.... yeah... that is too bad.

I'm running a knee injury right now, so can't sit seiza. Still doing standing kata..... waiting for the results of an MRI and "the next step".

Yeah, practicing tea can be a lot less painful!
