I hate pu

by Alex » Sep 30th, '10, 09:27

Help!

I cant get inside the world pu. I do so want to!

Here's what I need.

Someone post a decent pu off an ebay vendor and I'll buy it and drink it. Something to ease me in. Dont challenge me now....I'm weak! I've had pu before and it tasted of old cigarettes and wild rocket with a nice helping of mud in there with a hint of fish on the back end. So that wrong? or do you all look for that in a tea?

some amounts and brewing advice for said tea would be good as well (gaiwan). Help me obi wan ....you're my only hope.

I'm leaning towards cooked. Something smooth and plummy if possible. I dont want razor blades and fishness - I'm so lost! help me!

I haven't found an overly flavorful cooked pu yet. Most of the ones I've tried taste like damp leaves from the forest floor. I don't mind that so much though, and it can be comforting. I heard that the Menhai Golden Needle White Lotus was a good shu, but after trying it out yesterday, I wasn't too impressed. Not bad, but I couldn't pull any real flavors from it other than the aforementioned ones.

I think you'd do better trying an older sheng, some of the ones I had for OTTI 5 were pretty good. But I'll let the more experienced pu-er's (get it?) give you some real advice.

A good Guafengzhai or Nannuo should do the trick for you.

It would be good if you can let us know what Pu you had so that other suggestions can be made.

If you liked cooked Pu and don't like the fishiness / fermented taste, try go for older Pu as in 5 years above. The older it gets the less fishiness, but then some aged cooked Pu may taste like dirt, so sample till you found one that you liked.

I recently managed to find an Age Pu that I really like. It doesn't have the fishiness / fermented taste at all. Doesn't have the wet wood taste. Sort of aged herb kind of taste. Liking it a lot.

My point; Diff Pu has Diff character. Don't conclude so fast that you hate Pu in general as there are many kinds of character Pu out there :)

As for brewing parameters for Gaiwan, you can try my usual method.
3g:150ml (if you prefer light taste)
5g:150ml (if you prefer stronger taste)
1st - Rinse | Quick
2nd - Rinse | Quick
3rd - 5 seconds
4th - 10 seconds
5th - 20 seconds
6th - 30 seconds
7th - 60 seconds

I'm no professional, but I've *heard* that big factory pu-erh has less of a chance of being "fishy" and strange tasting/smelling because of the more strict and controlled environments that the pu's are produced and aged in, where as the smaller places don't always have the knowledge or resources to do that.

I've always liked BBB's beginners guide.

I really like the Xiaguan mushroom tuos...lots of menthol and woody flavours...the one I had was very clean tasting...that´s a raw puerh...try to find one that´s a few years old... Yunnan Sourcing has one from 2002 but I cant load the site right now to give a direct link.

May I inquire which one you found?
It sounds interesting.

I would recommend very highly

All the aged puerh is excellent. In my opinion, any of them will give you the puerh experience that you have been looking for. You can buy samples.

Not a huge selection, but the 2003 Wild Yi Wu looks promising, and I'd like to give the 1990s Royal Cooked Puerh a try myself.
