Fav Cup Size For Teas

by Ambrose » Oct 7th, '10, 17:57

Ive recently been drinking alot of gyokuro also more sheng now that the seasons are changing.

Long story short I seem to love my sencha in a big cup, my sheng in a smaller one and gyokuro in a medium.

Ive tried mixing sizes on each tea but these are my fav thus far most enjoyable.

what is your favorite cup size for each tea, here are mine

gyokuro - 4oz

sheng - 50-60ml

sencha - 8-9 oz

I classify my cups in 3 broad categories
  • Large - 4oz. +
    Medium - 80-100ml
    Small - 30-60ml
This is pretty general, but I prefer large cups for Japanese greens and any type of White tea. I use medium cups for Oolong/Black/Red, and small cups for Shengpu & Shupu.

Also, I prefer a wider opening for teas brewed with boiling water and narrower for teas that aren't.

Cool topic! :D

I pretty much like a 4-5oz max for everything.
A 4oz flared cup is universally perfect for me.

I use 350ml cups because that is the size of my teapots

though I will be using 120ml later when my new oolong and puerh pot arrives

This is sort of hard to answer I use cups varying in size from half ounce, to cups that hold about 20 oz.

Though I must admit the 20 oz cup, is actually boxed up and stored with all the empty boxes.

But for Japanese greens I often use cups 5-15 oz, but for most other teas I use cups between .5 and 2 ounces.

My favorite cups are about 7-8 oz apiece--big enough for one infusion from my 5 oz kyusu plus a little extra water to dilute it if I overbrew a bit. I also adore the 3 oz shino cup from the "Shadows" TC TA SO #2 as it is PERFECT for my small gaiwans for nearly everything that I don't brew in the kyusus, and big enough for my smaller 'yixing' pots too: small enough to be easy to quaff before the infusion cools too much, and large enough to hold a full infusion.

It is frustrating that the cups at my local teashop are about 50mL or a little less--too small for a full infusion from the gaiwans--or much larger, 8-10 oz. I'd like a wider variety in a 3-4 oz size.

That's hard for me to answer too. I use everything from tiny gongfu teacups to large yunomi's and chawan's. It depends upon what I'm drinking, how I'm drinking it, and whether or not I'm drinking alone.

+1

When I started my tea journey 3 years ago I purchased lots of teaware and this imcluded lots of the really small gongfu teacups.

Drinking mainly Chinese Mainland oolong I soon started to prefer chunkier 70ml size cups for Yancha and Ornate shaped flatter Borneol bowls for Dan Cong and Jing Dezhen porcelain for Anxi.

Then I fell for (larger) artisan wares from Bill Perrine and Petr Novak.

Now I have started exploring Pu and find myself digging out the tiny Gongfu cups to use.

It's interesting how our tastes change as we travel through the world of tea isn't it.

Honestly, unless I'm at home, I drink my tea at work from what once was a coffee mug.

I use the smaller gong fu cups (about 40 ml) for drinking oolong at home and at work I use a 4 oz Japanese cup that matches perfectly with my gaiwan, so that I can eliminate using a fair cup at work.

As with many of the posts here I often use a larger cup for Japanese sencha and much smaller ones for Chinese and Taiwanese tea. My Japanese yunomi range in size from about 3/4 ounce to 12 ounces. My Chinese and Taiwanese cups range from 1/2 ounce to 3 ounces.
