Sencha vs. gyokuro

by Tobias » Oct 7th, '10, 21:57

There seems to be a lot of sencha fanatics here but I got the impression that people who prefer gyokuro are underrepresented. Is it because of the price, the taste or something else? Wouldn't a exclusive tea like gyokuro have a bigger following on TC?

Sencha is just a little more easy on the wallet and more a daily drink than Gyo..IMHO. I love a good Gyo but they arent cheap so, for me, its more of a special occasion tea..while sencha on the other hand is everday thing for me.

I've given them both a pretty fair trial, and for me, what I like best about them comes through more in the sencha than the gyokuro. I do not particularly care for the strong umami that is produced by the shading of gyokuro, and I am in the lucky position of actually preferring the cheaper, more abundant tea.

I'm also embarking on an experiment that I hope may have the happy outcome of demonstrating to me that I prefer young sheng puerh to the aged stuff, which again may be a case of pleasing palate and budget at the same time.

Having gyokuro should be a somewhat special occasion, well IMHO. It is like cheesecake, crazy delicious but not everyday.

Sencha is a much easier tea in most every respect, IMHO. Certainly a lighter treat than cheesecake. It is fit for daily or even constant consumption.

The Mrs however would drink all my gyo non stop til it was gone, thus I lock it up!

I've tasted Sencha many times, but have never bought it. I'm all the way Gyokuro guy, but then I don't buy it that often these days as there are so many other types of tea to drink at stock.

I always have tension when good tea are opened, have to finished it asap.

Japanese greens aren't part of my daily routine, but I will splurge once in a while on some Gyokuro.

That's similar to how I feel. I imagine it would be different if I brewed it more along lines of kabusencha but I brew it really concentrated.

I vote both.

Well, Gyokuro is aged anyway, a little extra aging seems OK for gyo. I have had gyo open for 6 months and it even got better.

Another thing about Gyokuro is it doesn't show its region as much as Sencha. You can have two Senchas and compare them and find that they are both good but different. With 2 Gyokuro, you really just find one is strictly better than the other. I, however, am a gyokuro fan, but don't find myself drinking it much because of price, quantity and that it goes bad quickly.

Gyokuro is in da house! After a good 6+ months w/o ...

I usually do not buy gyo til well into the Winter, sort of a tradition I started around 5 years ago that also satisfies my somewhat logical thinking.

But just bought fave Sencha YM Supreme from the O-C and decided to include fave Kame Gyokuro ... an "anniversay prez" ... though I am not sayin' for whom!

Oh, from where?
O-cha

I went for the cheaper gyokuro since I had splurged a bit on matcha.

here´s what I picked out

Uji Matcha Kiku Mukashi
Yame Gyokuro
Organic Sencha "Oku Yutaka"
Chiran Sencha

probably won´t pick up a houhin this year...will brew it in the smaller kyusu for now.

but maybe next year I´ll go for a hagi-yaki houhin....
