Hello everyone,
Thank you for the nice forum. I'm a newbie here, but a long time tea advocate. Sorry for the wrong spelling etc. English is not my first language.
One question has been bother me lately and like to ask if any of the members has any knowledge about. As indicated on the title. Does artificial light harm tea just as sun light? In my logic in doesn't, because it doesn't contains UV light or other harming rays. Can anybody enlight me about this?
Cheers
Re: Storing tea, sun light and artificial light
Yes artificial light can damage the tea, many wavelengths of light not only UV can cause the volatile compounds which make up tea essential oils to break down. It´s those aromatic oils which carry most of the flavours and aromas of tea and they can be broken down very easily.
Skin damage from light requires higher energy wavelengths like UV because it causes genetic and cellular damage...DNA and cell walls are a LOT tougher than aromatics in tea essential oils. So it´s not really comparable at all. Living tea bushes aren´t harmed by sunlight.
