Looking for a new brewing vessel for black tea

by Alucard » Oct 14th, '10, 18:12

I use a gaiwan or a clear glass pot with one of those metal strainer springs in the tip. The stainer has become stretched over time and now bigger pieces of tea get through. I also wash the gaiwan and glass pot and use for oolongs and greens so I am looking for a new brewing vessel 220-260ml that will be used for Chinese black tea.

I could get another glass pot but i'd like something different a Kyusu teapot. If this would only be used for black tea would a Kyusu work well or is there another vessel that suits black tea better? I do have a yixing pot from YS but i like the taste better from the glass pot and gaiwan. Thoughts?

Get a porcelain kyusu or a Tokoname.
And a strainer and a fair cup.
:)

Thanks Victoria. I saw 2 of your porcelain Kyusu in another thread, they look great.

:D

Or might you be interested in 1 or other of our Artisans.

I bought a Petr Novak teapot before deciding what to do with it.

As I have gaiwans and yixings galore for other teas, I decided to use my Petr Novak for black tea.

Generally black tea is prepared gong fu style in china (like the name sichuan gong fu suggests), I would use yixing cup for black teas.

Go with a porcelain teapot of some kind. I like black tea brewed in porcelain because they hold heat better than glass or really thin porcelain gaiwans.

Interesting you suggest Tokoname...is it a good pairing with black tea? Obviously would not want to brew sencha in the same Tokoname that you´re brewing black tea in.

I suppose many don't like the idea of cross brewing, but I guess I'm just fond of Tokoname pots. The clay is very fine and less porous. Still as you say, I would dedicate it only to blacks.

I really like Tokoname pots too, which is why the suggestion made me curious :)

I have that exact Kokoro kyusu from Den's.... very versatile, nice pour, brews anything well, and the price is so affordable, it won't give you Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder if you break it. And, might I add, its not easy to break it, its like a small Sherman Tank. I've sent it on a couple of tumbles over the last couple of years.

I know I read a post here where someone said the screen can be removed easily for cleaning but now I cant find it. Have you tried removing the screen? Is it supposed to be removed? Thanks.
