Best BIG insulated mug?

by syabiku » Apr 12th, '06, 01:31

Greetings,

I like to make about 20-24 oz (~3 cups) of tea at a time and immediately put the tea in one big mug because I'm too lazy to keep going back to refill. Currently, I am using a cheap, hideous insulated plastic mug similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00011R4XE.

Clearly this is not ideal--besides looking awful, the plastic inside stains. However its big plusses are, well, it's BIG, insulated (not great, but better than nothing), and has a lid that I can sip through.

Does anyone know of something a bit nicer that fits my needs? I know there are some great thermoses, but I want an insulated cup/mug I can drink from easily. Although I want a lid, it does not need to be spill-proof. Lastly, 20-24 oz would be a minimum capacity; something even larger (30-32 oz) would be better.

The Big Zoo has some 24 oz thermal mugs. They are very similar in design to what you had from Amazon, only much more attractive.

You might want to consider a coffee mug. JoLay has a 24 oz Valentine's mug. And Kitchen Kapers has a 30 oz 'danger men working' coffee mug.

A nice thermos is another route. Those are also really easy to find/get in large sizes (just visit your local 'whatever' store).

Oh, and a stein is another idea I've seen floating around here. Like this one from UCSC.

P.S. See what Google can do for you!

At Walmart I found a 32 oz. BubbaKeg (by In-Zone). Not very pretty, but it kept my tea warm for over an hour and a half. And for iced tea, it keeps it cold for several hours.

NOT spill-proof. And the one I bought is rather top-heavy because it's made to fit in a cup holder, but they make another one that's barrel-shaped.
Very handy -- holds a whole potful of tea so that I'm not constantly refilling my teacup (at work, one should at least appear to be working more than drinking tea).

I currently own the 52oz BubbaKeg (that isn't a typo for 32, its really 52) and it has kept tea hot even when accidentally put in the refrigerator for three hours.

It works if the voltage isn't too high.

The most important thing is probably that it's made of stainless steel and not plastic. Stainless steel will keep the temperature MUCH longer (hours! if unopened and nearly full, that is), especially when you preheat (!) it with boiling water before you fill it with your tea (just fill it with boiling water to 1/4 capacity, put the lid on and shake it like a cocktail shaker, it'll heat up significantly).
Vacuum insulated stainless steel is the way to go. Then I'd assume you get what you pay for...
I can recommend German brand Alfi. I think you can get their products on Amazon.com.
I use an Alfi thermal carafe to store my hot water so I can infuse my loose leaf tea several times without having to boil water over and over again. It works very well.

Don't know the exact capacity of the biggest sizes, but check out the Zojirushi mugs. My wife just got one (smaller one - 8 oz size), and it keeps water very, very hot for long periods of time.
