What kind of ceramic are these tea cups?

by BarbJ » Nov 18th, '10, 18:31

I really like these two cups, but don't know anything about the kind of clay or glaze they are. Any comments? Thanks.

They look like high iron stoneware to me....I am pretty sure the spots in the glaze are from the iron from the clay entering the glaze during firing.

Not sure what the glaze is exactly though...

Or, the glaze could have iron spangles in it. Also looks brushed with two washes, one cobalt, one iron.

Thank you both, interesting information! I like them both, they have a good feeling in the hand.

I'd say stoneware range also (Orton cone 7-10) , and probably reduction fired from the nature of the tonality of the iron and the cobalt as well as the overall whitish glaze. The foot looks like a very high iron containing body (unless it was treated with an stain or slip over the body), which would easily explain a lot of the hematite nodule speckling burning into the glaze.... but it could also be iron filings added to the glaze as was mentioned.

best,

John,
Thanks for the detailed info!
A lot of the brown spots have either tiny bubbles over them in the glaze, or a tiny indent or pore in the glaze where the bubble popped, but not all of them have this.
