Please give me fuel... suggestions :)

by exquisite » Dec 2nd, '10, 06:32

Hello everybody,

I was wondering if anyone around played with this type of alcohol stove,
and which type of alcohol would be the best/safest fuel to use.

What arrests my preoccupation is the safety of the kettle and the lack of
smell as I intend to be using it indoors.

I´m not exactly a chemistry genius, and thought real experience of
fellow teachatters could provide more valuable info than wiki pages.

Thanks!

"Denatured alcohol" or Everclear.

This is what we use in the States, some of the brands have additives that create smoke or stains on the kettle. This seems to be the cleanest burning.

Clearly denatured (especially if marine-stove labeled) or medicinal alcohol seem to be the best options for a non toxic, no residues, clean flame.

Seems that isopropyl is not proper at all for this type of activity.

Found some basic short infos here:

A friend has this exact Lin's stand. I can tell you that it is really well made.

I personally use bio-ethanol initially made for bio chimney. Medical 90° Alcohol is the best, but rather expensive and difficult to get by in big quantity in some countries.

The one I´m expecting features this shape, but the sand/yellow finish, directly from Lin´s. Not listed anywhere on the site, but I wanted it to match the kettle.
That´s why I am preoccupied with some pure fuel (at least for the beginning) , because, both pieces (kettle and stove) have unglazed surface in direct contact with the flame.

I have found 2 types of alcohol (medical ethanol)l available around : the 91º and the 96º . Both pretty expensive for intensive use, still haven´t decide which one is the best.
