Has anyone tried this green tea?

by River_PhoeniX84 » Dec 2nd, '10, 12:36

i searched for a topic on this tea but couldnt find one.
so i became a new member to hopefully get some info.
ok the tea is Hottaen : Green Tea Powder (Uji Matcha Powder) - Large 500g and costs £35.98, thats excluding delivery the link is
http://www.japanesefoodshop.co.uk/hotta ... -526-p.asp
if any one wants to check it out.

any way what i want to know is has any one tried this and if so is it any good? any opinions on it?

at the moment i drink Yamakaen Powdered Green Tea (matcha) 100g £13.50 from japan centre which i like very much and i can take a bus or train to the shop. the link is http://www.japancentre.com/items/854

so the hottaen seems like a good deal but because its pretty cheap im thinking that it might not be very good. im considering buying some to try it out sometime after new years. by the way im in the uk. sorry for the long read. thanks for any info.

judging from the description:
"Uji matcha (powdered green tea) is ideal for tea drinks and as ingredient for both Japanese and Western-style confectionery", and coming from a site called japanese kitchen i would say this is not a matcha of quality to drink prepared in a tea bowl like higher quality matcha can be prepared. this seems to be for cooking/baking use or blending in drinks to give a green tea flavor. the price would indicate that as well. however i never have tried it.
let us know if you order it and how it is.

500g of matcha is a lot in case you do not like it - even for cooking.
So I'd try a smaller portion first.

Even matcha I really really like I would not buy 500g of...Mom gave me a 100g can of a decent matcha for my birthday and the green is starting to fade before I´m finishing it :?

It´s tasty and I drink it often...even making 2 or 3 bowls of it at a time and still I´m not even using 100g fast enough to keep it from starting to go stale. :(

I'm making a bowl a day (2 good chasuku each) in the morning and absolutely did not have any matcha becoming stale from the 5 x 100g bags I got from Yuuki-cha (plus some from Hibiki an).

A 100g bag lasts me about 2 months. I always transfer some amount to a small aluminium (actually Hibiki an) bag for bi-weekly consumption.

probably the difference is the can has a lot of empty space now it´s getting close to empty. With the bags you can squeeze out the extra air. And I assume that you only have one open at a time and the rest sealed at least...or even sealed and in cold storage?

Indeed, I only have one vendor matcha bag open at a time- I've mentioned 5 bags, but this is through a year+. I do not have 5 bags at a single point in time (although this will change with the upcoming 500g bag !) . The last order was two 100g bags from Yuuki-cha. I open one, finish it, then go to the other.

About bags: my intuition told me right from the very beginning that so-called 'air tight' canisters were at best misnomers. All that space filled with air inside the canisters. So I use a small (tiny ? holds 40g) aluminium bag for daily matcha, that I maintain rolled and closed with one of those office more or less large black document clips.

For daily teas I tend to use bags inside canisters. although I've been pretty much slack about this recently. I kinda of like the Yuuki-cha canisters since the inner plastic lid does not necessarily have to be at the top but can be right against the tea, well inside the canister. Although this does not make away with the amount of air, it kind of restrict exposure to the tea, somewhat. As I like to think.

Description makes it sound like powdered tea. Add to a cup. Use in cakes. Can be good in its own right, but you don't drink that matcha style with a whisk and chawan. The taste could too crude for that. But it could make nice green tea powered-based cups.
This being said, I haven't tasted it.

Hottaen have interesting products such as 'Heat-Resistant Uji Matcha' and 'Disinfected Uji Matcha'. However, they also have organic matcha, although all their matcha product descriptions has references to confectionery.

I wonder at this point if 'matcha' in Japan streets also mean plain green tea powder and not necessarily what became known as 'matcha' for Occidentals tea aficionados.
