My Ippodo matcha is on the way!

by peanutz » Dec 6th, '10, 00:51

Hi all,

I'm new here. Just want to join the tea chat as I've recently fallen in love with matcha big time. Not sure that I'm addicted to it but I just love the taste of it so much that I probably have 3-6 cups a day! Very bad for my pocket unfortunately :(

Anyway, got a few tins of matcha from Ippodo on the way. I'm so excited! I used to buy a cheapo one from an Asian grocery (A$6 for 40g tin) and it's drinkable but not great. I tried one from eBay. It's not bad, great colour, reasonable price but probably not buying again as the flavour is very mild. I also bought a couple matcha from yuuki-cha: Sakuraka and Yame. I absolutely love the fragrance of the Sakuraka. Yame has nice flavour as well. I wonder if anyone has tried this Sakuraka (Shizu-7132) in Sencha and whether it's any good.

Cheers!

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your ippodo order. I haven't tried their teas yet, but hope to...one day

Have you tried Fukamushi Sencha yet?

I picked up my package from the post ofice yesterday evening. The package is very well packed. I love how Japaneses do very nice wrapping and packaging of their products.

I ordered 7 different matcha:
- Hatsu-Mukashi (600yen 40g)
- Fuku-mukashi (1,000yen 40g)
- Kimmo-no-mukashi High Quality (600yen 20g)
- Ikuyo-no-mukashi High Quality (1200yen 40g)
- Tancho-no-mukashi High Quality (800yen 20g)
- Kan-no-shiro High Quality (1,600yen 40g)
- Tsukikage Special Matcha (Only available in autumn!) (900yen 20g)

I tried the first 3 matcha last night: Hatsu-Mukashi, Fuku-mukashi, and Kimmo-no-mukashi.

Being new to matcha and only tried 4 different ones so far. I'm afraid I'm not qualified to provide full analysis of the matcha due to my inexperience.

I find Hatsu-Mukashi is a bit bitter comparing to the other two but I love that kind of taste anyway. Fuku-mukashi & Kimmo-no-mukashi are quite similar to Yuuki-cha's Yame but Fuku-mukashi is a bit cheaper actually. I haven't tried preparing Kimmo-no-mukashi as koicha as I've never made one and not sure I want to use that much matcha in one go even though I know matcha could taste different based on so many things: water temperature, amount of water (koicha vs usucha), etc. I did taste the three matcha when it was quite thick while preparing them before I dilute it with more water.

As for colour, they are very nice green colour as powder but as a tea, they aren't that super vibrant green colour but still very nice green.

I find the more expensive the matcha is the less bitter I can taste, which is what Horaido says on their website. It's more well round, smooth, YUMMMM I was quite satisfied with 3 cups of matcha last night. I normally drink around 4-5 cups from when I get home from work till bed time. Out of the three that I tried last night, I still think I like Yuuki-cha's Sakuraka best. I love its fragrance so much! Is there any other matcha with similar fragrance?

This evening, I'll continue my journey into the world of Ippodo's matcha :)
