Tuesday TeaDay 1/25/11 Tea versus Cup

Good TeaDay to you all. We would like you to stop in throughout the day and share what is in your cup.

Yesterday we discussed "good to the last drop." You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. Does the TEA in your cup today cost more than the CUP holding your tea? Base this on either 4 ounces or 100 grams of tea. Please share.

I've drank about 6 varieties of tea so far today and used 3 cups, so each time it differed. Generally though I think they equal out.

The Silver Needle I'm currently sipping is much more expensive than this old cup from the Eighties. Tea wins, as always.

Since I drink most of my tea out of the hand-made japanese tea cup that my wife bought me, the tea is definitely cheaper than the cup. Its worth it though, I'm sure it makes the tea taste better.

Occasionally the cup wins, but generally it's the tea.

I think I'm going to start off today with some Autumn 2010 Te Ji Tie Guan Yin in a lovely though cheap thrift shop find, tea definitely wins this round.

Drank my sencha with a chawan today, so chawan was a bit more expensive, but not by much.

Pretty much always the cup. Hagi!!
It's not a fair comparison though. Once you drink the tea, it's gone. The cup is not.
So, for the cup to actually be more expensive than all the tea you'll ever drink from it, it'll have to be quite an expensive cup indeed.
I mean, if you had said 200 g of tea instead of 100 g it would be much closer. Take more than 200 g of tea would win most of the time.

Anyway, I think having nice tea with tea ware you enjoy a lot makes for a better overall experience. It doesn't have to be expensive, but often is.

Had Takumi from Zencha this morning. Love it. It was one of the rare times I didn't use a Hagi cup. I used a white porcelain cup instead. So today, tea wins, ha!

With what I spend on teaware, tea should be free !!

Cup wins nearly all the time. But I have no regrets.

My policy, based on sad experience with chipped dishes and broken glasses, is not to spend more on teaware than I can tolerate losing to breakage. So my cups are either simple white porcelain, which highlight the appearance of the tea, or cups I make myself (so free.)

On a normal day, I use a free mug at work, so most definitely the tea!

My cups are about $3-20/pc.
My tea is about $ / 100g

Nice thing about most Japanese TEA, it is really relatively inexpensive. The bad thing about Japanese tea, the CUPS and other wares are not so inexpensive and are as addicting as the tea itself.

Today, the tea is a very inexpensive sencha karigane Musashi with the Mrs. from O-Cha costing around $13.50 per 100 grams. The cup, Hagi SO 13 Tempest costing more than $50 with shipping. But the combination is so delightful!
