Can anybody help me identify what these teapots are made of?

by jaderabbit » Feb 18th, '11, 21:29

These are two pots I picked up a few summers ago in China. I don't think they're yixing because don't produce that clear bell-like sounds when I tap them. It's more heavy sounding.
This brown one I bought at a random store because I liked the shape. Looking at it carefully now, I realize all the glaring defects. It also doesn't retain heat that well. But it's still cute too me.

The green one is my pride and joy, even if it's not yixing. I think it might be made of 绿泥?I've just been using it for my Taiwanese oolongs.

Any ideas?

Hard to tell from these pics. How much did they cost? If less than $30-$40, I'd say they are probably made form "mud clay" posing as real Yixing clay.

Yeah it's hard to tell from the photos. At least we need to see the smoothness/surface texture of the teapots.

In China, it's possible (but not easy) for one to get a passable quality authentic yixing at $10-15 range. But spending more money doesn't guarantee you get better quality.

If you bought them from a well established, large shopping mall in a large city (where prices are usually inflated by 5-10 times than smaller places), usually there is little chance the products are of poor quality. Then you can get averagely good quality at $100 range, and either merely passable or slip-cast quality at $30-50 range. But these are just general figures. Everyone has lucky and unlucky days.
