Two forum related things

by MarshalN » May 7th, '06, 23:22

1) Maybe make it so that when registering, you need to enter something (one of those distorted pictures of words type thing) that needs human identification, avoiding those bots that post ads.

2) Disallow anonymous people from using the chat room. I think we have a kid or two who is posing as multiple anonymous and totally disrupting conversations.

Something does need to be done, I still really think that adagio needs to seriously consider adding moderators to the forum also. I think it would make everything run a lot smoother.

Because...

1) Spams - especially those of adult nature (xxx) - would reflect badly on Adagio as an online business. Their presence may look like they've been sanctioned or accepted by Adagio.

2) When they pretend to be someone else or type nonsense, they are just like spammers.

Thanks.

I'll mention this to Ilya. I've been deleting spam posts as fast as my little heart can take it, but there is indeed no way I have of modding the chat room. I'll see what can be done.

Well, with the chat room, I think it will help if you get rid of anonymous posting privileges, if that's possible.

Right now, we have people who I feel are posing as random personalities and just post away, and completely disrupting otherwise good conversations about tea. I get the sense last night that was two or three kids who came on and decided to takeover the chat function.

The IM portion of Tea Chat is awesome. But you get 2 or more anons and it is chaos. You get the feeling they are just yanking your chain and asking questions that don't seem...real. It is like they are there to disrupt conversation. We even had a spammer come into the chat room to spam us.

It is easy enough to register. Well, too easy apparently by all the spam we are getting. Throw the spammers out...period. cheat casino just spammed us for the 2nd time in 2-3 days.
That word thing described above that requires human participation in the registering process may be the ticket.

Some forums have a spam area. Apparently, spammers need to add "google points" by spreading spam so they move up in searches...or so I have been told. So, some forums give them a spot to do there thing and theoretically it does not interfere with the rest of the forum. And anyone who thrives on reading spam, can go there to there hearts content. I don't know if it works in practice though.

But anyone violating spam policy should be thrown out, period.

...and that is my 2 cents worth.

Well we do have a "Type in this series of letters so we know you're a people," so someone is physically setting up an account. I'm being vigilant about getting rid of them.

I know on the IM chat thing that at least one other person and I have been "anonymous" but said our names when we had to say something very quickly and either hadn't logged in yet or had just logged out. I agree, though, some anonymous people can be off. One is ok, though, I think, especially if they have something to add to the conversation. Btw, it's very easy to get talking about anything and everything in that IM thing-y, neh? Oh, and yes, the spamming members are definitely making my hair stand and me go "ack". Ok. I'm done now.

What about making the anonymous person type in their name before posting, and would have to use that name while using the chat? That way it won't be like 3 different people posting as anonymous.

That doesn't sound bad, Andy. Sounds like a good idea. That way we can tell who's who and maybe any of us members who aren't logged in can either log in or type in our names. :D :D

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We have enabled a character-recognition feature on TeaChat when you create an account with us, and that did reduce spam by over 95%.

Unfortunately, the only way to reduce it further would be to have Richard or I scan through each post before making it live, and I'd hate to penalize the overwhelmingly large number of legitimate poster just to thwart the few bad ones.

As for the Instant Messenger, we've had this feature available for over 6 months and this is the first time it seems to have attracted any annoying visitiors. I'll keep my eye out and change the code accordingly if it proves to be a problem.

Really? You weren't here when we had the onslaught of Junior High kids just before Christmas? That was, um..., interesting.

It seems like they (the highschool kids) discovered that Teachat's IM function does not get blocked by their schools' web filter, so they use TeaChat's IM to chat during class maybe or during school breaks.

I like the fact that Teachat's IM function does not get blocked by my company's web filter too (MSN and Yahoo chats are blocked, otoh)! Ilya, I hope you won't modify the IM here so as to make it blockable by my company's filter.

Still even if it works it might not be the best idea as it would only encourage more spammers to come out to post. Besides why not make them play by the rules like everyone else, as adagio already provides the opportunity to get "google points" by listing your website in your profile and then becoming a contributing member of the TeaChat community. Which I can attest to from personal experience works as my website after staying at a 0 page rank grew to 3 within a month or so of adding my website address to my profile and TeaChat without me doing anything else to promote my website.
