Vague vendor question -- yixing or porcelain jars

by Drax » Mar 22nd, '11, 06:54

I have been trying to relocate an online vendor who was selling yixing clay jars. I went through my list of bookmarks, but I couldn't seem to find it... anybody have recommendations?

Or alternatively, I'm looking for a place that sells large porcelain (I guess they're porcelain) jars -- the type you see in pictures of tea shops and they're full of tea (whether loose or tuos or similar).

My pumidor is near bursting and I'd like to get some sort of 'bulk' storage for tuos and such. So yes, I'd like them to be large!

Of course, other recommendations always highly welcome.

I know you have probably thought of this so sorry, but have you asked any tea shops, they must have supply chains if theirs get damaged and with luck would have spares around that they might consider selling :)

Rishi used to sell some medium sized Yixing jars from 经典陶坊 - maybe that's what you were thinking of?

These things are big, fragile, and heavy, so you can imagine why not many of them end up being shipped over here. You could look at antique stores for ginger jars and that kind of thing (a ton of fakes, so buy cheap ones unless you're really confident in your abilities at authenticating porcelain). You can also look into things like kimchi jars. See also the this thread if you didn't already.

Does this mean I shouldn't have flung my pu in cardboard boxes in the closet?

Of course there is always the sometimes maligned Shouzhen

But probably not large enough for you

There are these people, who sell a range of Tong jars. I have no idea if they are any good, but I came across them the other day in a hunt for Fu Zhuan tea bricks (which they don't have).

And there is also a Cornwall-based French potter who makes something he calls a "Puerhtière".

It's not cheap, but it's properly beautiful.

Chimpie -- unfortunately, there are no good (local) tea shops in this area that would carry such things. Although, I am headed up to DC soon, maybe I should make a visit to Chinatown... anybody know if there's a good tea store in DC's Chinatown (or anywhere in that area), or any place that might carry such things?

wyardley -- yes! I remember that thread. I get the feeling that people in places like California have much better options than I do. I am definitely looking for "large" -- tenuki mentions jars that hold 7-10 beengs; those are pretty big. I could go that size, or maybe more ~5. (I'm just talking volume here, I'm still wanting to use it/them as tuo storage).

Chasm -- no need to worry, I'm sure they're fine in a box in a closet. I just want to have storage that's a bit decorative, too (which is also why I have a dedicated pumidor).

Herb Master and Rayuela -- definitely nice looking, but I am definitely looking for something a bit larger.

Thanks for all the comments, everybody!

I'll re-iterate one of my additional questions down here... anybody know of a place in the DC area that might carry something like this?

Good luck, DC Chinatown is pretty much a bust.

Awwww... I've been there a few times for dining purposes, but mostly before I became a tea junkie, so I was hoping that maybe I just hadn't noticed that super sweet tea spot..... :(

Maybe something new has opened up since a few years ago. If you are there, no harm looking.

You might have more luck in MD, but even so, you will probably have a hard time finding one locally.

If you're willing to pay the shipping and proxy fees, you could try one of these guys; the disadvantage is that most of the Taobao proxies only do express shipping, which might add up fast with an item this heavy.

My personal pick is this plain one

This one is a little cheaper, and also not bad:

This is the same brand that Rishi used to sell. Most of them don't have the size listed on the auction listing. I think they are medium sized, though (big, but not huge).

Hrm, that would be interesting. I'll hunt around there a bit more. Certainly the base-price (before shipping) isn't bad.

Though these jars seem to be 14-18cm in height. I think I'm shooting for something in the 30cm range. I'm looking to be storing a large amount of tuos (: hehe.

This discussion did trigger a memory for me... I had actually bought a couple of jars in the 15-18cm size, from the Chinese Teapot Gallery Tea Culture person on eBay. I've sent that person a question to see if they can get bigger pots.

An example of the containers can be found here.

Yeah - looked at some ones that I have here and realized they're not as big as I thought.

The proprietor said that 25-30cm sized contained are currently not in stock. I've asked to be informed whenever they get some in... I'll keep my fingers crossed and my eyes open in the meantime....
