A a potter I'm curious to see examples of what people lust after. I'd probably choose a Hamada Shoji piece or a toasted shino bowl from long ago. I'd take a big slapped around Oribe bowl too.
If you could have any tea bowl.....
What would it be? A crusty old Karatsu piece from the Momoyama period? A beautiful piece of shino embellished only with casually painted lines of iron, covered with a perfectly pitted glaze which blushed orange and pink where thin? A modern bowl by a Living (or Deceased) Treasure or master such as Arakawa, Hamada, or Rosanjin? Maybe you'd like a bowl made by one of the potters here?

No matter what the taste in pottery, I believe people lust after pieces that are unique, special, and come with a bit of the artist's soul.

That's true. I like these too.

I have a fondness for sung dynasty hare's fur type bowls. I actually like them in a more "V" shape, but I would gladly sip from this.

I adore Song dynasty pottery and the black glazed wares are among my favorites. I was lucky as an art student in Boston to have a seen a stellar exhibit of these pots at the Harvard Sackler museum. I went about trying to copy them of course. The Musee Guimet in Paris has a wonderful collection too.TomVerlain wrote:I have a fondness for sung dynasty hare's fur type bowls. That's a pretty classic example of form and glaze from that period, although the glaze drips don't usually freeze so dramatically.chingwa wrote:Tim, is that tea bowl really... 1000 years old... ?!?!?!

Thanks Saladin. The drip glaze almost touching the ground which just formed before breaking, is especially attractive to me. It added a whole dimension of wabi into this classic piece.

Stunning, timeless pieces.
I would love to hold those beautiful things, but only in a well-padded room without any hard surfaces nearby, so that they might survive the experience to delight many generations to come.
But I do feel like I have some pieces that are quite as beautiful, lacking only the special patina of age.
