Hi all!
I am looking for a kyusu that has enough for "1 cup" meaning-
4-5oz or 120 - 150ml
However, I would prefer it to be an actual kyusu (side handle) than for it to be a houhin, because I will brew everything from gyokuro to sencha in it, and need to be able to hold it if I've poured hot water in it (I would assume that houhins work best with low water temp b/c there is nothing to protect your hands).
The only other thing I'm hoping to find is a kyusu with a ceramic mesh (sasame) rather than direct holes in the side of the teapot or a metal strainer.
Does anyone have any good suggestions or sources?
Here are a few I'm considering, but if you can suggest more, that would really help!:

Re: Help finding 1 cup Kyusu
Tingjunkie just put up this yixing kyuusu for sale... you might clarify what 'multiple hole filter' means, and how it handles Japanese greens...
But not bad for a stateside option at $40....!
Otherwise, I can give a thumbs up on the Gyokko kyuusus... I have a larger one in a yohen style that is really great.

The premium Den's kyusu is really quite nice ... and white! Feels very nice in hand. It does have either a white slip or glaze.
I have wanted to purchase a Gyokko pots, a very good deal! Since it is more upright, you can brew just about any Japanese green in it including fukamushi.
The Banko has a courser screen that could be a little troublesome for certain Japanese greens such as fukamushi.
The extreme flat one from Zensuke, this could be a bit troublesome pouring.

Oh, our TeawareArtisan Petr Novak could make you one! His usually have a pretty decent ball style screen.
BTW, there is a Petr TA SO beginning Thursday at 3 pm Eastern USA for viewing and 6 pm for ordering! There will be kyusu-s and shiboridashi.

I have always found that pot to be very attractive. It does look like it would feel nice. Perfect size for one...nice price...Chip wrote:The premium Den's kyusu is really quite nice ... and white! Feels very nice in hand. It does have either a white slip or glaze.

I liked it enough to later add 2 of the matching cups and yuzamashi.tortoise wrote:I have always found that pot to be very attractive. It does look like it would feel nice. I do like the Den's kyusu a lot because of the price and size and even simplicity (also, since it is white, it will emphasize the color of the leaf/tea, which is nice).Chip wrote:The premium Den's kyusu is really quite nice ... and white! My main concerns with this one are:
-Will the inside start to stain?
-How noticeable is the logo and mascot? I think the mascot is funny, but not sure I want a logo on my teapot.
-Will it work for some fukamushi like O-Cha YM or Den's Fukamushi sencha Yame? I prefer asamushi, but I still very much enjoy fuka and for simplicity's sake would like to have one main pot to use.
I can imagine that the Banko would be the hardest to use.
The screen on the Zensuke looks pretty big, but you have a lot more experience than I - so you think it will cause issues because it is flat?
Thanks for everyone's suggestions thus far!

I had noticed those, good price range and look. Yes, if I decide I'm fine with the round mesh, that is a good option.NOESIS wrote:One of my first kyusu teapots. Works like a charm.

Re: Help finding 1 cup Kyusu
TBH, I was not enamored with the mascot on the kyusu prior to purchasing, but it become more endearing quickly. It does not bother me at all. But this is a personal taste issue.
This brews 3-4 ounces best, 5 ounces might be pushing it. Yes, there is some staining. I have never tried to clean it except the usual hot water rinses.
I would say if you get your pouring technique right, and brew smaller steeps, you can brew fuka in the Den's kyusu. But lower pots with sasame screens are not the best for fukamushi. A taller pot will work better, thus my comment about the Gyokku from AN being good for fuka.
A taller kyusu allows the leaves to cling along the pot sides before clogging up the screen. A lower sasame pot, the leaves go right to the screen.

+1..For Fuka and a sesame filter a taller "barrel" shaped pot does work best. I have a nerikome one that works very nicely for Fuka and Asa alikeChip wrote:TBH, I was not enamored with the mascot on the kyusu prior to purchasing, but it become more endearing quickly. That's good to know the mascot became more endearing.
Most of the time, I would brew 4 oz, sometimes 2, so it seems like the right size. I'm not someone to clean out a teapot other than hot water, so good to know it will stain some.
That makes sense about taller pots, I figured that might be the case (clinging to the sides as a help). Sounds like Gyokku should be a serious consideration, but I'm also keeping my eye out for the Petr TA SO too.
