Japanese teaware in NYC?

by Dogma_i » Aug 3rd, '11, 11:23

May be nibbling through the Big Apple soon. Usually focus tea-related activities there on Chinatown and a few friends' places. Wondering now if - especially with Takashimaya gone - there are any good places to buy Japanese teaware beyond the usual kyusu and matcha gear. I am mainly looking for nice commercial-grade (not necessarily artisanal) houhin, shiboridashi and futanashi. Prefer Tokoname to Bizen style.

Thanks for suggestions, if any-

Takashimaya gone. Ito En gone. NYC is a bit bleak for decent Japanese teaware these days. If you can get out to New Jersey to the Mitsuwa Maketplace, they will have an ok selection. I think there is a place or two downtown too, but I'll let others fill you in as I'm not sure.

Sadly, all of my favorite places have closed, but there are still a couple of spots around town.

Here are a couple that I like:

The Makari (on 3rd ave, near 12th St): antiques and contemporary Tokoname, Hagi, and Iga-Yaki.

Sara NY (near Central Park, east side): Japanese pottery and work by Americans and Europeans working with Japanese methods.

Ippodo Gallery (in Chelsea I think?): I haven't been here, probably quite expensive, but might be worth checking out.

Joan Mirviss Gallery: super high end and expensive, but great if you'd like to see work by some of the great contemporary potters.

The Japanese Culinary Center: I haven't been here, but I hear that they have some ceramics and teaware, mostly studio production pieces.

Kiteya (soho): Kyoto craft shop. Occasionally they have ceramics.

Kinokuniya Bookstore (Bryant park): sone teaware in the basement.

I'm sure there are more places around town, but these are the places that I've come across. The Urasenke US hq is here--you might want to try contacting them and asking.

Also, if you've got the time, Fang Tea in Flushing has some amazing teaware, mostly from Taiwanese artisans.
