Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. Yesterday we discussed how we determined how much leaf, today we discuss how we determine how much water, sometimes there are some "tricks" we use. Please share your methods.

The pot determines the amount of leaf.... then the water "matches" to the pot. The two are "interconnected" relationships.

I use a "cheat sheet" for sencha. The yuzamashi (water cooler) I use 90% of the time has iron spots in the glaze. I know where 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 ounce spots are on the inside of the yuzamashi.

I determine how much tea liquid I want to brew before picking the appropriate pot, then use the yuzamashi spots for the right amount of water.

For gyokuro, I more often use the volume of 1-2 small gyokuro cups to determine/measure how much liquid I will use.

For other teas, I would say the pot size more determines how much water I will use as I approach these teas much more casually.

Began the TD with Miyabi with the Mrs. I predetermined I needed 5 ounces of water and filled the yuzamashi to the 5 ounce spot.

The pot determines the amount of water, although it may get filled a bit more or less full to adjust if the quantity of leaf is a bit high or low. I do measure the capacity of my cups and pots quite carefully when I first get them, and have that quantity in mind as I prepare the leaf for each brewing, whether weighing or eyeballing.

This morning, brewing up some An Ji 'white tea' in my marvelous Petr Novak shiboridashi, which holds 90 mL, 2-3 grams of tea, pouring it into the matching yuzamushi, and thence into a small yunomi holding barely 90 mL, and drunk with great enjoyment.

My pot definitely determines the amount of water used. I can kind of eyeball my yasamushi and my 8 oz pot is perfect for a typical coffee cup or half full for a good sencha cup.

I've been drinking mostly Japanese greens lately -- shincha from Zencha (The Ultimate) and O-Cha (Aoi), gyokuro from Ippodo, temomicha from Kaburagien -- so I've been brewing in a 100ml houhin. For the temomicha I add water slowly until the leaves are covered; I really could use a shibouridashi.

Yeah, they are not the uber wide versions, however he would likely make you one!

Compared to the 5 houjins I have used here, the Petr shibs are a bit shallower and wider and allow much better viewing, but nothing compared to the extreme versions as you shared.

Began the TeaDay with Hana No Kaori on a cool rainy day.

Is anyone else drinking tea today?

Size of cup, gaiwan, or teapot determines how much leaf. And then I just pour enough water to suit the vessel and leaf volume. So I suppose eyeballing and instinct are my techniques.
I had the last of my most beloved 338 Dong Ding today. I don't know if I'll ever have dong ding as good as that again.

Something strange woke my gf and I up early this morning. One of her amplifiers suddenly recieved a strong radio signal, weird thing...it wasn´t plugged into an antenna or anything to revieve signals. It suddenly started very loud and gradually declined...it sounded something like thunder or heavy machinery or both. When it finally ended we were both sitting awake trying to figure out what the heck just happened and I suggested we check the solar weather. So we went on to the NASA site Spaceweather.com and sure enough there was a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the sun and an ongoing magnetic storm....they said the strongest one in many years. Strong CME´s can really mess up electronics on Earth and what we heard was high frequency radio interference from the sun directly activating her amplifier.

Also Auroa would have been spectacular last night did anyone catch them?
It was cloudy here so we didn´t get to see

Or did anyone else notice something strange from their gadgets?

I usually eyeball the water after measuring the tea, but only after learning the "watermark" for each vessel. The exception is Gyokuro. I have a shiboridashi set that's large enough for two cups, so when I'm just making one cup I measure out the water in one of the cups. If I'm making two cups then the water cooler is just the right size (on purpose, of course).

No tea today. I'm at my sister's home and I've forgotten to replenish her tea supply. Time to "gift" her some 2011 tea.
