Are double-walled glass teacups a good idea?

Hi, I've found some cute handcrafted Taiwanese double-walled glass teacups at very reasonable prices.

Yay or nay? Or is thin porcelain better? Any issues?

The glass is very thin, and all it takes is one tiny fault for the vacuum to be released ... and from then on you will have moisture in between the two layers.

At least that is my experience.

There is a drawback in that they work almost too well at keeping the tea hot. I have found myself waiting impatiently for a small cup of tea to cool down to a drinkable temperature.

I have two I bought for espresso but I dont use them very much for either coffee or tea even though they are pretty much the ideal size. I find they keep things too hot to sip comfortably so I dont really like them. I much prefer porcelain for drinking from.

ymmv...some people like to sip hotter drinks than I do.

It is also a weird sensation sipping from a "cool" cup while the tea may be scalding. The temp differential is not ... relaxing.

Usually other materials give you a fair warning as the cup temp is about the same temp as the liquid within. You can feel it with your hands first, then your lips ... prevents you from burning your mouth.

I often use double-walled cups to brew green tea for my customers. Of course, green tea is brewed at a lower temperature, but I have had no issues or complaints about it. The cups I am using are tall and show the tea's dance beautifully.

I enjoy my double walled cup. I love seeing the various colors of the teas as the "body" of the cup, plus I have a habit of holding my cup in both hands, sniffing it while drinking and it allows me to do so without burning my hands. My lips did get scalded a few times when I first started using it, but I quickly adjusted. I think it also just looks cool to have any beverage in a "floating" cup, so its pleasing to my eyes as well as my nose and mouth.

I've had similar experiences to everyone else. While they do allow you to really admire the beautiful color of the tea, I find a small white porcelain cup to be more enjoyable.

I tend to burn my lips sometimes so I think teacups that don't signal heat will be a bad idea. Will give it a pass.

I'm eying a glass teapot for blooming teas though.
