Gaiwan/tea cup questions please.......

by tea.and.peace » Oct 28th, '11, 11:14

Hi. I searched around in a few places, but could not track down what I was looking for. Could use some more experienced users wisdom on two questions.

First some background. I'm fairly new to this stuff, but feeling real good with my set up. Currently I'm experimenting with various oolongs to see what I like best in taste, smell, etc. Generally I like variety so I have different things for different moods.

question 1 - At some point I want to try puer tea. I'm doing the gaiwan style, and have been using various oolongs in the gaiwan. Can I use the same gaiwan for puer ? Or is it recommended to have a separate gaiwan for puer infusions ? I don't know if the puer will leave some sort of unseen residue behind spoiling the lighter oolong qualities. I plan to drink more oolong then puer. Currently after a oolong drinking session I rinse everything with water>rinse again with super hot water>then hand dry right away. So if including puer drinking I need to figure out if - I can use the same gaiwan for both oolong, and puer>or have a seperate gaiwan for each>or clean tea ware differently after a puer session.

question 2 - What about the tea cups for that matter ? Can same tea cups be used for both oolong, and puer drinking sessions ?

I may have more questions on this, but your feedback will help to dictate how I move forward. Thank you for reading.......

Depends on the material. Glass vessels can be used for anything and everything, as can porcelain and other glazed pottery. Unglazed vessels are generally used for one type of tea.

I apologize I did not identify that as important info. Makes complete sense though.

So my cups, pitcher, gaiwan are all porcelain most certainly glazed is what I use. I do not have any non glazed clay for example.

Sounds like you're all set for exploring puerh.

There's no need to get caught up in all of the nuances of yixing pots and particular clays unless you (1) are already a confirmed pu-head, (2) happen to like the pots, and (3) feel the need to get every last nuance of perfection our of your puerhs.

Well this is great news for me. As my space is limited so the fact that I can use my current ware for puer is great.

For now I'm really enjoying the gaiwan so I don't really have any desire for a yixing. So yeah I'll just keep it simple for now.

Thanks for all your thoughts !
