How to identify firing-type in Yixing pots

by needaTEAcher » Nov 8th, '11, 04:38

I have a lovely new duanni pot, which I just posted in the show off, but I have no idea if it is low-, med-, or high-fired. The vendor was clueless. How can I tell? What about other Yixing clays?

The best way to tell is by the sound the pot makes when you lift the lid up < 1cm, and let it fall back into place. It's a comparative thing between different pots, but clay type and wall thickness also plays into it. In short, experience.

A higher pitch for higher fire and lower for lower?

In general, yes, but clay with larger particle size will always sound duller than fine particle clay of equal firing levels.
