Does salt damage antique porcelain?

by collector » Dec 11th, '11, 20:29

Hello

I wonder if saltz does damage antique ceramic, for example saltz contained in salad soups, food which also may contain sometimes vinegar. Thanks

I regularly clean my porcelai teaware with salt, for me it works very well, the hardness of salt is way less than the glaze of the porcelain, I think it is no way for salt to scratch anything off porcelai other than deposits, yesterday I cleaned my gaiwan set, I used rock salt at the begining and I used finer salt after, just wet the teaware and start grinding the deposits off, I use my thumb coated with a lot of salt.

That I do not know, I would be more careful, some fencai paintings are on a relief not under the glaze, they are burnt on the surface, so I would be cautious around those areas.

Does salt damage gold and other hand painted elements?

by collector » Dec 16th, '11, 12:58

Hello

just to know if cleaning with saltz could damage, if not pottery, hand painted elements, as gold for example.

You already asked that.
For the record, the answer is yes.

Fired gold lusters are very, VERY thin and pretty soft applications of the metal . ANYTHING that causes the slightest abrasion will, over time, slowly wear away that surface. Eventually revealing he underlying background glaze.

best,
