I've posted threads in the past asking questions about eBay offerings. A recent eBay offering of kuro raku made me realize that I don't know much about the history of this style.
My of my exposure to kuro raku has been of modern pieces (whether from vendors, or from seeing other examples on eBay). It seems like many (most?) of these are relatively black, but if they have a secondary color, it is often slightly red (usually just extremely faint; nothing major).
What I thought was interesting about the example that I linked is that it has underpinnings on the yellow-brown side of color, which I don't think I've seen before (or it certainly doesn't seem common).
Second, this particular example purports to be quite old (200 years), though the vendor typically states "can't be sure."
So again, that got me interested in the history of this style, and better understanding some of the aspects that I've mentioned. Anybody have any information to share, or read?
Re: Kuro raku example and questions
I went to visit again the raku museum in Kyoto a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, taking pictures is forbidden. But I remember seeing a few black bowls with yellowish stains or patterns. Actually, this is by far my favorite style.
I haven't found nor looked for any info on it yet, but I'd be happy to get some.
I've seen a nice kuro raku bowl in the Horaido shop for less than 8.000 JPY, a bit like this one. But it was a couple hours after the museum, so at the time, everything looked pretty ugly in comparison to what I saw before...
