Ugh . . . smashed my gaiwan

by BrooklynBrew » Mar 24th, '12, 09:24

Grabbing my morning tea, I knocked over my baby gaiwan and it smashed on the floor. I know I am a tea nut because I have to go to Chinatown and replace it (I got it for $8 at TenRen here in NYC).

I figured you'd all understand. LOL.

While I'm down in Chinatown I may get a 2nd gaiwan to bring to work for grandpa style drinking. Should I go big for this? The gaiwan I use for at home brewing is a 2oz one which is perfect. But for grandpa style, what would be a good size? It'll be used for green, ripe puerh and the occasional oolong.

For grandpa style, a glass or or thermos works best. The monster gaiwans that Chinese people use for grandpa-style in Chinese teahouses are 8oz at least. You can also find them in Chinese restaurants. They seem to be difficult to find in the US.

I ended up getting a lidded mug. I didn't like any of the big gaiwans I saw. So gonna try it now and see how it works :)

And I replaced my baby gaiwan! Yay! (of course TenRen wanted to sell me the whole store)

Wish I had someplace close to go look at tea ware like that. Here.. we have one shop, and they have maybe 4 total and nothing under $25. I would love one that is smaller than my current one.

Lidded mug is a far better choice than a gaiwan for grandpa style.

I got that from your blog! :)

It works very very well, btw. Tried a Yunnan Black and Gen Mai Cha in it so far. Have a thermos I carry with me, so I just fill it from the hot water dispenser at work and I can refill as I drink.

Plus it has the lucky cat on it! All for $4.50!

I just use a regular mug or glass for grampa style, after the leaves expand they tend to stay out of the way more or less. But that's just me. Suit yourself with your fancy lids. :P

Lid is there for keeping the tea warm, especially in later infusions when you need that added temperature to push more out of leaves that have been brewing for a few hours
