Junk or not ?

by David R. » Aug 18th, '12, 07:48

Simple question. I found this on a flea market for a very attractive price. I really don't know what I bought though. If it is junk, I will turn it into a lamp I guess. It has no seal.

So if any one has an idea, it would be great ! I can provide other photos on demand. It is 21 cm high and wide approx.

Have a nice weekend everyone !

Hrm, the design looks familiar... if you look at this page of shipwreck items and scroll down to the "wine bowl" part, you'll see an item with a very similar style (the symbol drawn in the same fashion... blocky-type). The shipwreck site photo also shows the base, and it looks like there's no seal there, either.

So, the style is certainly an older one. Could it be authentic, or just a modern replica...? I have no clue... sorry!

No use trying to date it, large ginger jar mass produced. I use mine for storing spring water out of the nasty plastic bottles. I would put a cloth or paper over the top instead of the lid so it can breath, otherwise it can get gross after awhile.

Many thanks ! I bought it precisely to store water. I guess I will make attempts with this one. :)

Good to know, and sounds like a decent use for the jar...

Is it glazed on the inside?

Yes, it is. Much like the exterior.

google "double happiness ginger jar" and you'll see a lot of similar pieces.

Double Happiness is for the pair of characters "囍" , of which one is "happy" or "joy" - and popular for weddings

hard to date from the photos, but it looks like there are some "orange" flecks in the glaze, and it might have been from a wood fired kiln.

In any case, it is nice and decorative. Not sure if i'd store water in it, but might be great to air out pu'er.

Another object, same question. I know this is a very long shot, but when one meets the exact shape and size he loves, isn't he allowed to take a "risk" ? :) The lid is broken, which contributed to a low price hopefully. If it turns out that this is not total rubbish, I might get it fixed.

Thanks in advance.

This is a fairly old (several decades) style of chaozhou/santou teapot. They are fairly low fires, maybe because they are meant for heavily roasted oolongs. I think they are cool.

Personally not a fan, but this is the genuine article. Hope it was cheap enough.

can't really comment on the porcelain. whether it's a junk or ming-qing, I'd believe. but I can tell the yixing isn't from Yixing, more like Shantou but looks old.

Shantou is from mud whereas Yixing is from ore. I don't think low-firing is on purpose.

Cute pot, David! I have two of 'em but maybe slightly larger.

Enjoy them! It takes a lot of 'seasoning' to get the clay smell to go away. Be warned.

Many many thanks for your expertise. I will consider the repair to the lid then. This is good news !!

Same kind of tea indeed the_economist. Are you using them ? On which tea ? I will begin using bleach. It should do the trick.
