Looking for Gongfu Teaware in the US

by JD » Jul 23rd, '13, 17:38

I've been trying to find certain types of gongfu teaware in the US. Like unglazed yixing teacups, a tea leaves presentation bowl with the spout for pouring the leaves into the pot after viewing/smelling, small wooden trays for the cups (I tried pu-erh shop, but they apparently only have 1 tray left), larger glass cha hai (pitchers) like 400ml or larger. Things like that. And I only want stuff from the US. Made in China is fine, but it must be located in the US. I will not wait a month to get items delivered to me from China.

If that's what you're after, visit a Chinatown. No one is very good at stocking these things online.
http://www.newcenturyteagallery.com comes to mind as a starting point.

I usually avoid Yixing cups, glazed or otherwise. The materials used are never very good and it steals aroma needlessly.

You can buy some fancier (more expensive) items made in Taiwan here http://www.redblossomtea.com/teaware.html?p=4 and http://purepuer.com/puer_tea/do/category/accessories here.

Also in the US:

In many cases, you'll get better items for a better price, even factoring in fast shipping costs, if you're willing to order from outside the US.

If you have a Ten Ren / Ten Fu in your area, you should be able to find some of these items there. In addition to the places mentioned above, you can check out http://houdeasianart.com/ (though not much in terms of teawares these days), http://teahabitat.com etc.

Personally wouldn't recommend Yixing teacups, whether glazed or unglazed.

Though they are not in the U.S., they are in North America. Camellia Sinensis (http://camellia-sinensis.com/en/tea-store) has great teas and a thorough teaware selection. I've met the owners as well and they are great people. They are also one of the few places I've found that stocks Lin's Ceramics from Taiwan.

Blessings!
