Breaking in new yixing teapot
Hi , i am waiting for a new yixing teapot and i wounder , should i start using it with my high quality oolong or my low quality tea ?
Re: Breaking in new yixing teapot
Modern: Boil it for about an hour, let your teapot cool down in the cook ware with water still covering the entire teapot. It will be ready to use.
Old pot: slowly break it by soaking it in a container for a couple of days. Then run it under the hot water tap several times; place it in a saucepan, bring it to a boil, turn the power off, let it cool down. It will be ready to use (following the advice given to me by fellow teachatter Teaism

Hi Bagua7
Yes you are right for old pots. There are many ways but for old unused tea pot out of the box e.g those 20-30 years old Yixing pots, it is good to soak them in clean water for a few days. Then slowly boil them, and off the gas when it boils. Sometimes when you keep boiling them, the rattling will cause the pot or cover to crack. I normally slowly break them it after that, e.g. I don't use for brewing tea yet but use it as intermediate pot. I just pour those tea I brew from another pot until it soak enough tea oil after a few days before I phase them I for the real action.
The soaking session is not soaking tea in the pot. I don't soak tea in pot overnight for hygiene reason. After using, clean the pot and pour in hot water and empty it and dry with towel. Sometimes I sun the pot as the Uv is good for sterilizing the pot.
In the past, out of excitement, I just pour boiling water into new old pots and believe me, the crack sound that you hear is one of the worst ever sound that you ever heard. I have a big box full of crack pots from all sorts of silliness.
Oh yeah, btw, there is an online recommendation that you can instantly shine the pot by boiling and freezing the pot etc, I tried it and the pot also went into the box of cracked pots.
If you see the article, I suggest you give it a pass and don't try it.
Cheers!

Re: Breaking in new yixing teapot
Definitively Teaism, especially for us people living in Wester countries were access to old pots is almost impossible. I can't imagine cracking a Factory-1 pot during the boiling process.
Man, those pots are hard to find today...heart breaking stuff.
Old zhuni...don't even bring up this topic.
Freezing and boiling?? Insane! Who provides this advice? Take a look at those desert rocks:

Re: Breaking in new yixing teapot
Thank everyone but i was asking after i clean it witch is the best tea to start train the teapot, good quality or low one ?
Re: Breaking in new yixing teapot
Use the same tea or type of tea that you want to brew for long term.
There are many schools of thoughts, some use one type of tea for one teapot and some all tea for one pot. It is your pot and it is up to you to decide. Generally, many people use one type of tea, eg. Yancha for one pot, another pot for oolong etc.
