I suspect it is image size that is giving you a problem. If you resize a photo to 640 pixels wide or less, that should work if using a photohoster.
Then wrap the bbcode for image around the url like this
[img]yourimagelinkhere[/img]
Alternately, if posting a photo as an attachment, then 500 pixels wide is max.
