This is a really interesting series of posts...the one thing I would add is that I live in the central valley of California, where a whole boatload of produce is grown, and the air quality can be pretty nasty here. It's easy to point the finger at China, but the same risks are happening domestically with other consumable agriculture products.

I think the biggest worry is Hangzhou. The tea region is virtually right next to the city. For other cities, the actual tea regions can be tens of kilometers away from factories and city centres.

With regards to Fujian, I've been to Wuyishan and there's hardly any factories and the city itself is very small. I think besides tea, there's only a wood carving industry there. Not sure about other Fujian regions.
