Antique Yixing Caddy w/1914 Puerh
Here are some pics showing a dated tea caddy with 250g of 1914 Puerh. It sold at auction for US$17K + premium.
Re: Antique Yixing Caddy w/1914 Puerh
Here is the label affixed to one side of the caddy.
The photo of the Puerh was not good enough to tell much.Re: Antique Yixing Caddy w/1914 Puerh
$17k doesn't sound THAT bad... a cake of some 1970's pu'erh goes for that much. it does depend on all of the variables though
Re: Antique Yixing Caddy w/1914 Puerh
That's what I was thinking. 17k is less than some cakes half the age. But those cakes have wrappers and it's known what they are, where as this is more like mystery puerh? In a way, this seems like a bargain! who cares about wrappers? you get a cool caddy with this one.BW85 wrote:That's what I was thinking. 17k is less than some cakes half the age. Exactly. I was just saying wrappers and known origin will increase the monetary value of a tea. Hence this is a bargaindrinking_teas wrote:who cares about wrappers? you get a cool caddy with this one.BW85 wrote:That's what I was thinking. 17k is less than some cakes half the age. Very cool - the canister is really nice, high lust factor for that. Having 100 year old tea in there is just so much more cool. Seems low price for the whole package considering how much other antique tea and caddys go for.
Re: Antique Yixing Caddy w/1914 Puerh
I believe the wrapper tells you the producer of the tea. A search can be done on what that tea actually is. And, as someone else mentioned, you get a very cool caddy. The top of it is formed like a woven bamboo basket. Very fine and rare.BW85 wrote:That's what I was thinking. 17k is less than some cakes half the age. I agree with those who say the price seems too low. Perhaps this is not what it purports to be, but rather a counterfeit that is old or masterful enough to be valuable enough on its own merits? Of course, to repurpose kyarazen's maxim:

That label says "Be sure to send a sample of this to mrmopu"..... at least that's my translation of it.Tead Off wrote:Here is the label affixed to one side of the caddy. The photo of the Puerh was not good enough to tell much.

a search turns up not so much information on the tea merchant, any more information is appreciated.Tead Off wrote: I believe the wrapper tells you the producer of the tea. i think my ultimate "maxim" to anything is : 请喝茶。

All we can do is speculate on the tea. But, the caddy remains a lovely piece, with a Guanyin figure and Heart Sutra incised into it. This sold in the USA, btw, not China.

Here are the other 2 with interesting treatments of the body and lids.
Re: Antique Yixing Caddy w/1914 Puerh
any idea on the age of the caddy or should it be around the said date of the tea?Tead Off wrote:All we can do is speculate on the tea. But, the caddy remains a lovely piece, with a Guanyin figure and Heart Sutra incised into it. This sold in the USA, btw, not China.
it is interesting that the caddy retains the traditional "zong pai" vertical writing style, but instead has chosen to go from left to right.
