I am finding gaiwan are really challenging but satisfying to make - only a very small margin of error is allowed, or the pieces will not fit nicely together when assembled. When they're glazed, they have to be fired separately of course, and this increases the risk of a bad fit. So I feel great when it works.

A very small kyusu (merely 75ml) in porcelain:

It was in last weekend's load, fired to 1250 degrees Celcius. Since it was slightly underfired the surface is matte and there are some earthworm marks on the surface of the glaze near the spout.

This little porcelain teapot below was thrown in Limoges porcelain, and glazed in the same glaze, fired to a nice translucent white at 1280 degrees Celcius.

Lastly a shuiping - or an attempt at one...
This was a real challenge, as I don't normally make so "formal", or rigid teapots. Makes me feel really humble... Imagine there are craftsmen who turn perfect ones out every day...

The teaboat was smallish, 20 x7 cm with 18,5 cm usable surface, as it was intended to fit onto a small table and to go with a previously ordered kyusu and cup.

Some new pieces fresh from my kiln:

Dear All
Some pictures of the latest pieces to emerge from my kiln. Among them a handful of shibos and another handful of kyusus, now for sale on Etsy.
Most are thrown in a mix of two local clays from Wallonia, Belgium. It is a coarsely grogged, iron-rich clay (about 5%) fired to its max temp of 1250 Celcius. It is similar in quality to the lighter-coloured coarse clay I have used previously, but staining is no longer an issue with this dark body.

I will eventually post all the pics from this firing on my blog http://www.potterybyin.blogspot.com. There I shall also soon post some pics of my current pet project - a viable hare fur glaze. This firing was a breakthrough in some way - but there is still a lot of work ahead... I will just post a very selective shot here (avoiding the view of the inside ) and go away and ponder how to improve the recipe:
