My latest kintsugi work (yixing)

by futurebird » Feb 22nd, '15, 14:09

I have been trying to master kintsugi for a couple of years. I'm most interested in applying it to yixing clay pieces because it is something that one rarely sees (being rather multicultural) -- I enjoy the contrast of the gold with the simplicity of the clay.

Here are my most recent efforts.

This teapot had a broken lid.

My goal is to make the seam visible, but flush.

The inside of the lid was difficult.

It's lovely. Did you use gold powder or leaf for this?

Well done, futurebird. How did you start learning? Did you take a class or something? :?:

No class, just buying supplies online and reading everything I could find.

Well, I've gotta say that these professional-looking results are even more impressive considering you're self-taught. :D Any pointers on how I could start learning?

I hope I never have to fix one of my teapots, but if I do, I'm fixing them with SOLID GOLD! 8)

You know, when I first heard of kintsugi, I thought it was a type of goldsmithing, done purely with molten gold and lots of fine motor skills. When I found out how it was actually done, I thought to myself, "wow this actually could be doable." Good to see that it actually is, with some effort and practice.

It's real urushi and tonoko powder. Takes a lot of layers.
